Jun 18 2008Imperial March Played On A Floppy Disk

This is a video of the Star Wars Imperial March played on a 3 1/2" disk (the 5 1/4" floppy's rigid little sister). It's just as awesome as you thought it would be. Unless you thought it wouldn't be awesome, in which case you're wrong. Just like I was when we were playing along with Jeopardy at the bar last night. Seriously, never wager your left nut on a Daily Double.

Two more videos after the jump -- a flatbed scanner playing Fur Elise, and one playing Ode to Joy.

Thanks Flogag, let's start a band with nothing but computer components. We'll be rich!

Time on your hands...I wish I had that much time on my hands...oh crap..I do..I'm writing this.

Um, that's the Imperial March (a.k.a. Vader's Theme), *not* the "Star Wars theme."

Yeah, I just out-geeked you.

@ 2. JoseMonkey, i'm glad you beat me to the correction... but in eithre case eff'n awesome!!!

i wish i had time for that shit

*Whoosh*

I managed to click on the page right as the name changed, and the universe exploded.

At least now I know why.

Okay, stupid question, but how do they do this? Am I right in being incredibly impressed?

you are, i too am curious of how they acomplish this.

What 7&8 said. I have access to thrown out faulty computer stuff (skips) so as long as they make the noises I could theoretically build a band for free.

You know, I wanted to make a clock out an old SCSi harddrive. It would post check on every hour and freak my cubicle mates out.
I want one of these to play at my wedding!

How do they get the floppy/scanners to make that sound?

I think thats fake. You don't see any parts moving and it could be just some guy with a kazoo

@11

Black Magic Shit.
That's how they do it. They are l33t witch-geek-doctors.

@12 -

Yeah, totally, except for the parts moving and the absence of kazoo sounds in that video.

Look in the center of the screen to see the read head moving up and down.

Don't bother to watch the other videos either, by the way. That's the best way to ensure you're correct with your 'fake' accusation.

Best use for a floppy in years

I have an old 8" floppy drive. Would that be used for bass?

Well, to be honest, it's just a matter of changing the stepper motor's RPM :)
More rpm -> higher pitch :D

It does take a tiny bit of geek-witchcraft... and a custom-made stepper motor controller...

this is even more way radder than those!

Radiohead - Nude on a PANOPLY of broken computer junk!

he left in a minute long sequence where it is just loading the song for some reason but after that, man it gets real.

I love it. The imperial march the best, of course.

Makes you wonder about Vader's ipod in his darth suit...

like uberdork said, it's just RPM stuff.

There's a vid of a F1 car playing the british national anthem with the motor floating around somewhere too... that one is pretty good.

So coooool!

Cool..... But why?

Thats the best Computer'stuff ever.
