Apr 28 2008Sure, Why Not?: See-Through Monitor Display
Remember the Holographic Vaio Zoom laptop concept from awhile back? Pretty titillating wasn't it? I wanted one. Did you want one? If you did maybe we could start a club. You know, something with a secret handshake. My dad said we could even use the storage shed out back as a clubhouse. So whattaya say? Fine, but you're missing out. My mom always makes snacks for me when I'm done playing in the yard. Oftentimes accompanied by, oh I don't know, a piping-cold glass of chocolate milk!
So this is a video of what a transparent laptop display would look like. IT IS NOT REAL, it's just been rendered with a little green-screen magic so you could imagine the possibilities. Which, I've got to admit, seem pretty unexciting. "Holy staplers, that's my desk! I can see my desk through the monitor!" That said, it's cool and I'd buy one if it was the same price as a regular monitor. It would be good for taking notes in class while still managing to sneak a peek at the girl that sits in front of you. The one you've had a crush on the whole semester. You know, the one you finally managed to muster up enough courage to ask out on a date, but mid-conversation you very audibly tooted because you were so nervous and she ran away to her friends laughing? *sniffle* Yeah, that one.

IT'S A FAKE!!!
You can see the greenish background when he pitch the laptop between the edges.
About the proof of concept, it help you to know who's behind your PC trying to scare you.

At 42 seconds you can see a hue of green appear slightly where the screen should be. They used green screen on the monitor and keyed it out, but no good enough. This also explains why every shot is static. By doing so, they didn't have to motion track anything. I call fake.

IF this was real, with if being the operative word, my eyes would totally bug out of their sockets. Plus it would probably drive me mad.
But we all go a little mad sometimes...
That's it, no more 2 pots of coffee before 2 o'clock. I seriously need to space it out. *pew, pew*
4. egohavoc - April 28, 2008 3:14 PM
that was the worst key i've ever seen. This is a lame post.

Fake, when the PC is put on the table in the opening shot, the green screen is reflecting off the silver PC and gain when the pc is put down the second time you cans see more green reflection. also at about 58 seconds there is a reflection on the screen, wouldnt be there if it was actually transparent.

congrats, you went into paint and made a green desktop, then you set your video editing software to render that color as transparent. truly inspirational

If I put my fist through it, will it break like my old laptop did?
8. Slappy - April 28, 2008 3:32 PM
so what happened here? The description says it's not real, and yet all these posts are saying "FAKE, you can see its' not real". Did they not read the description, or did the description change after the fake was outed?
Either way, this is the first time Geekologie has posted a mocked up video/photo of a non-existent technology and made a point of saying "this isn't real". Usually they gush all over how amazing it is...fantasy usually is.

I think it's funny how you all are shouting FAKE!!!
When he said it was fake in the post...
10. soniiic - April 28, 2008 3:33 PM
This could be feasible using the wii head tracking thing :D

HOAX & FAKE
there are no shadows of the monitors frame or back visible through the see-trough desktop. My guess is that they took pictures from cetrain angles, put on a light-green color on the desktop and pulled a chroma-key trick.
Clever, but fake.

Concept is cool. Would like to see the real thing, but not really sure how useful it would be
SG - your *pew-pew* cracked me up, nice continuation.
and two words for all those out there calling "fake" - DUH and DUH again... did you even read the post?
13. The Ride - April 28, 2008 4:07 PM
Its a fake. it is a really really bad Chroma Key. I would suggest people, if you are going to do this, be smart about it.
Know HOW to key before you start making retarded videos like this

So how many more douchbags are going to keep posting FAKE?
Shows ya how many people read what they are making fun of.....
18. Odin - April 28, 2008 6:24 PM
You could do this with a small camera mounted on the top of your laptop with a video feed as a background.
Not hard.

Man that would be so nice if it was real. Yeah, the greenish hue totally gives it away, there's an old Japanese video showing a "see through" hand mirror using the same techniques this video's using. Would be cool though.
22. Simon - April 29, 2008 7:10 AM
just to clarify, the post states it isn't real, but created using a green screen:
"So this is a video of what a transparent laptop display would look like. IT IS NOT REAL, it's just been rendered with a little green-screen magic so you could imagine the possibilities."
*duh* read the F***ing post before you bitches!
Plus, how awesome would it be if there was one?
I mean, if I'm on a regular laptop and someone's coming at me with a knife then I can't see it, but a clear screen...
*i quoteth family guy*
23. poop - April 29, 2008 8:42 AM
well, i think it's great. i could think of a couple reasons that this would be useful.
...oh yeah and **FAKE**!!!!! there are no shadows on anything relating to the left side of the "monitor screen" on the laptop in the "background", and you can clearly see angle differences on the curtain in the "background". f***n' fake yo! fake ass bullshitz!!!!
so can i come to the party friday? i'll bring beer and meat. ...my meat.
24. Scott - April 29, 2008 9:52 AM
FAKE! FAKE! FAKE! I'm ignoring everything because I'm the smartest person here!
What? The narration already says it's fake? Boy would I feel stupid if it weren't for my sarcasm.
RMPL A$$clowns!

Its not that hard to do in real life, as long as you have a desktop or your monitor stays in one place. Just move your monitor out of the way and take a picture of where it would be, and then set that as your background.
26. Italian Stalian - July 31, 2008 5:01 PM
You are a retarded. It's not even proporting to be real. It said what it "would look like". Of course it's a fake! Read the damn description before you start yelling it's fake. It says it is.Thanks for pointing that captains obvious!
27. Italian Stalian - July 31, 2008 5:03 PM
Jaibo and martygras9 are morons. HAHAHA!
28. David - February 25, 2009 9:58 AM
Well big prizes for everbody declaring "its fake". Ur all regular Sherlock Holmes' , except the article says its fake already! I wish some people would actually READ articles before the comment on them!
29. pc repair geek - June 16, 2009 6:03 AM
Well though you have said that it is some thing a fake and a green magic.. but to the far my memories goes i have read some where that there are laptops or to be which has this kinda thing i them...
I dont find this green magic too far in the neat future.. it is quite possible..
But would not take the credit from you.. it was something cool to have and share..
30. james mitchell - April 13, 2010 4:22 PM
THIS IS FAKE but... it is possible with a camera in the back to use a live video stream to ur desktop background i would want it
