Apr 16 2008I Am Sad Today

While we always have a good time and joke around here on Geekologie, I'd like to take a minute to be serious.
Today marks one year since the Virginia Tech tragedy. It seems like yesterday. I was on my way to campus when my wife (who was starting a new job on campus that day) called me and told me to get back home. Someone in her office was listening in on the police channel, so they had a pretty good idea of what was going on. We both received our bachelors and masters degrees from Virginia Tech (finished last spring), and have remained in Blacksburg and work for the school. A lot of people in the community continue to struggle. Please take a minute to remember the victims, their families, and all those still trying to cope.

Was it really a year ago today?
It seems like a couple of weeks back, wow.
13. Robbie - April 16, 2008 5:51 PM
Thanks for touching upon this today, I've been a long-time reader of this site and enjoy your work. I also had no idea you were a hokie. I too live in Blacksburg (yeah, I'm a townie), and today has just been a hard day on all accounts. Thanks for this site, it makes me smile all the time (even today).
14. em - April 16, 2008 5:59 PM
thank you so much, every hokie is hurting today

I've always thought that if I ever wanted to commit suicide, the best way to do so would be to see if you can best the record for murder, and then presumably death by policeman or something. Find all the people you dislike, and kill them all up before you go, just to make the most of it.
17. Matt - April 16, 2008 7:26 PM
#15 and #16
Go f***ing jump off a cliff and kill yourselves. For the sake of our society please do us all a favor. I hope to God someone comes to your home and pulls you at gunpoint and I would like to see how bad you would shit your pants and cry for mercy.
R.I.P. VT Hokies

Okay, when our hilarious geekologie writer puts one thing on his website that is serious, it is not cool to call him boring! I say, thank you for bringing something funny into my day, every day.
And as someone who is far, far away from Virginia, all I can do is send my thoughts on the anniversary of such a sad day.
19. Mr.Anderson - April 16, 2008 9:26 PM
Wait...you are a Hokie?! You still live in Blacksburg?! Wow..talk about a small world. Also condolences to everyone in need.
20. poop - April 16, 2008 9:31 PM
I'm from Blacksburg, currently living here and I too had a solemn day, in remembrance of the massive amount of human potential that the world lost, last year.
Rot in Hell Cho! You f***tard. Your kind will never ruin the very real happiness for truly good people. You're lucky you were graced by a single second of proximity to the many great minds at Virginia Tech. Obviously, yours was defective. Hooah!
Go Hokies!
21. Joey - April 16, 2008 9:35 PM
Shame on you #15 & especially #16. I sincerely hope that your insensitive comments were a misguided and incredibly poor-tasted attempt at humor. If not, I pity your pathetic lives where your fellow human beings are nothing more than numbers to you and you don't possess the capacity for basic human empathy or emotion. How sad and lonely you must be. Maybe you really should just do the world a favor and have yourselves committed before you hurt yourself or anyone else. A little shock therapy isn't always a bad thing...
22. Rutter - April 16, 2008 9:42 PM
I think its very kind of you to take a break from the humor to reflect upon this sad event......
and shame on 15 and 16.... think before you speak.... if thats possible for you....
and as for 20.... I understand the frustration... but hate the sin not the sinner.... hate begets hate
23. astanix - April 16, 2008 10:04 PM
Sad indeed.
The whole time I was reading, I was like where's the joke, where's the ripping on people and things, where's the comedy. Glad you can take something serious on occasion.
24. Ok - April 16, 2008 10:25 PM
FAKE!
25. Laura - April 16, 2008 10:44 PM
I live in Radford. it was nice to see all of the red and orange walking around in the little "city" that Radford is and all over campus. In the face of tragedy, we find companionship and pride. Though it was a horrible, traumatic event, it reminded us of our brotherhood and connection to the people around us.
Rather than mourn those people who died, I smile at the memories that they left behind, and try to live a good life in their honor.
26. Katie - April 16, 2008 11:25 PM
Nice remembrance for the Hokies. You guys were remembered on campus today in Ohio. I just went on spring break w/ Habitat for Humanity and our Habitat leader was from Virgina. She wouldn't really talk about last year, but you could see how much it's still affecting people. You're all in our prayers still.

I hope you weren't making a generic racist comment when you said 'your kind'. Cause it sure seems like you were, at the least, trying to subtly hint at it.
Unless, by 'your kind', you meant highly mentally unstable psychopaths.
It's really rather ridiculous how ignorant (predominantly caucasian) people automatically turn hostile towards a whole race of people after a tragic event like this occurs... same thing happened after 9/11 too with every muslim or middle-eastern-looking person suddenly becoming the cousin of Osama.
With this ongoing polygamist compound horror going on, we should shun white folk for all being child rapists /sarcasm.
I guess the thought that after a year, people might still be trying to spin it off as a racial card really surprises me.
My prayers and thoughts go out to all that were affected and still are by this tragic event.
RIP.
35. Sanjuro - April 17, 2008 8:30 AM
First rate, Geekologie. That is a surprising and touching moment of pure class from this already great site. Very well written and from the heart. All my best to all the Hokies and families.

Somehow I don't believe Mr Geekologie Writer's link to the place, but I've come to expect lies from him about his "wife".
But yes, RIP and condolences to the families.
39. jaime - April 17, 2008 10:15 AM
Another fellow Hokie here (Christiansburg). My husband works at VT and I still feel that fear like it was yesterday. Thanks for the tribute.
40. Gary - April 17, 2008 10:16 AM
Never knew that Geekologie was run by a fellow Hokie!
Nice post. Lots of people's lives changed that day. Sometimes a reminder is needed that lots of people are still working through it.
41. Rod - April 17, 2008 10:20 AM
I too am a Virginian, and I knew several people attending VT at the time, and feel truly blessed that none were hurt. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those who were lost.
16.- Others have already said enough, but it never ceases to amaze me what a child hiding safely in anonymity will say for attention.
34.- Please pick up your race card, tuck it back in your pocket and walk away. It's obvious from the context that #20 meant nothing racial. I can't tell if you're overly sensitive or if you're racist yourself from your generalization of an entire race, ironically pointing the finger at 'white folk' for the same thing. It's not just whites, it happens everywhere to everyone. It's just another sad thing about this world, so make a difference or learn to live with it.
42. Ally - April 17, 2008 10:56 AM
Wow, I read this blog every day and had no idea the writer was a fellow Hokie. Amazing where we find each other. Hokie <3
43. Freddy K - April 17, 2008 11:03 AM
Geekologie Writer, thank you for taking the time to remind us about life. Though I am far from Virgina, my thoughts and prayers go to the the friends and families of the victims. Its difficult to adequately express the feeling of loss without sounding formulaic.
# 34 give it a rest. this isn't the time of place to play the race card. Please don't use others loss as a podium for your cause.
44. ZEBRA NINER - April 17, 2008 11:30 AM
I already forgot.
45. GEOFF LEPPARD - April 17, 2008 11:34 AM
Loving all the self-righteous responses.
Seriously, guys, there are billions of people on this planet. With so many of them dying each day, that you have the audacity to call me insensitive when I fail to shit my guts out in pity for the VT victims is appalling. Get yourselves sorted.
46. damn luddites - April 17, 2008 11:44 AM
# 34 ummyeah -
seems to me that you are the racist one. you automatically assume that "your kind" meant race, and not "f***tard" or one of the truely bad people.
and then you continue on to slander white people - "ignorant (predominantly caucasian)".
finally, you spread your hate speech - "we should shun white folk for all being child rapists /sarcasm."
so, what are you? a watermelon eating, car stealing, unemployed black person? perhaps a violent, uneducated, middle eastern terrorist? well, I say we should all shun black, asian (especially indian) and middle eastern, folks for all being child rapists, wife beaters, and murderers.
47. rayfield - April 17, 2008 1:01 PM

May such tragedies never happen ever again.

49. Soap - April 17, 2008 2:46 PM
He's right Pirate. One small group compared to...say the genocide in other countries (Africa maybe?) involving guns...why don't you talk about that... :(
50. jEnsmo - April 17, 2008 2:49 PM
God belss
51. damn luddites - April 17, 2008 2:49 PM
oddly, I've heard other people say the exact thing same as Geoff (not in regards to this shooting specifically, but just in general) about killing others as a way of committing suicide. so like it or not, some people think that way. I just try to stay on their good side (hoping that way the won't come to my house on suicide day).
beyond that, yeah senseless violence/death sucks, but it really is a part of life (it's been going on for at least as long as humans have been recording history). so perhaps it was a bit insensitive to post those comments on some sort of "memorial" thread. but I don't think Geoff (or anyone) is insensitive because they fail to shit their guts out in pity for ANY victims. personally, I saw it as just more senseless violence, and was glad I (or anyone I knew) wasn't a part of it.
52. Mishi - April 17, 2008 7:05 PM
A whole year already? God bless VT and all other campuses and schools, let's pray this never happens again...
RIP to all those who had their lives stolen from them<3
53. Joey - April 17, 2008 11:16 PM
Ok, Geoff (of #16 and #45 fame), while it's true that many people die on this planet every day, it's also true that for each of those deaths there are many, many more people who knew and loved them and mourn their loss, even if you yourself do not. No one is calling you insensitive for "fail(ing) to shit (your) guts out in pity," you absolute ass. What we so strongly object to is the insensitivity it shows that you took the time to type out a mocking response to this tragedy in a memorial clearly intended for it's victims, and not for assclowns like yourself, who are obviously merely craving attention through pitiful and juvenile shock tactics. Besides that, to even joke about recreating such a senseless and unbalanced act as killing innocents to end your own miserable existence shows a complete and total lack of respect for human life, a distinct lack of basic human emotions, and, last but not least, incredibly poor taste, so yes, you are incredibly insensitive, you moron. Seriously, you should seek counseling before you hurt yourself or someone else.
54. Matt - April 17, 2008 11:26 PM
I kind of feel bad now. Mr. Geekologie writer makes one post about honoring the VT victims and this forum turns into a form of brouhaha. But until the last day on earth, there will always be violence and sinful nature.

Squeeze out a tear for all the thousands of innocent Iraqis, Afghans, Africans, and lord-knows-who-else who've died as a direct result of either your action or lack thereof, be it your choice of vote or choice of groceries. Can't do it? then you're human.
I knew these people no better than you know the Palestinian kids getting shot by Israelis daily, or the Israeli families getting shat on with homebrew rockets. Forgive me expressing an opinion that differs from the norm, you sanctimonious f***.
Besides, I wasn't joking about 'recreating such a senseless and unbalanced act as killing innocents'. I reckon it'd be shit hot, but I'd bviously only do it to those that deserved it. I do have some principles.
While we're at it, who are you to talk about 'senseless and unblanced acts'? You're trying to reprimand a completely anonymous stranger via the internet for not caring about something. What a constructive use of your time, you crayon-chewing drone.
58. Supercock - April 18, 2008 11:48 AM
you stupid americans should ban your weapons. retards.. this is the price you pay for still selling that shit to every dildo that has a hand to fire off a gun...
regards from your superior european brother.. now go waste your f***ing dollar some more to poor asia, you rotten spoiled capitalists
59. littlerobotgirl - April 18, 2008 12:01 PM
I didn't know you all were in Blacksburg! That's kind of exciting. VT '09. My family is from here as well. It's cool to see all the other Hokies here too!
as for your talk of genocide in other countries, don't forget the things that have happened/continue to happen here at home as well. As someone who is half cherokee and who has grandparents who worked in coal mines, I must point out the exodus of the Cherokee and other indigenous peoples from our land and the massacres that occurred (at the hands of the federal government) at coal mining towns. At any rate, it isn't as though those of us who live here do not consider such things, indeed we are a university who is quite focused on trying to improve life in whatever aspect we can for people from all around the world. That should be evident from the goals of the victims - they were hydrologists, prospective ambassadors, researchers for various ailments, etc. We are all committed to continuing those dreams and we have hope to ease the pain of others worldwide. It is just that we are a rural community and to have a being as malevolent as this turn our family, friends, mentors, and loved ones into a soup of blood and tissue was an almost unbearable shock. I'm sorry that we have to interrupt your day with our mourning.
I understand not really caring about something that did not happen to you personally, but why does everyone want to be so harsh on those of us who did live through this..?
60. Joey - April 18, 2008 5:20 PM
I would just like to apologize to everyone for resorting to namecalling and pointless arguing earlier. Obviously emotions run high following a tragedy like this, even a year after the fact. My heart goes out to the families of all the victims and everyone else who's been affected by this horrible event. I wish you peace.
61. Rod - April 21, 2008 11:49 AM
Geoff, you're missing the big picture. You're an intolerable asshole if you think it's perfectly ok to make insensitive comments like that in an article about mourning just such an act. If you feel nothing for the victims, fine. Move on to the next article. Don't bother taking the time to write a comment about how we shouldn't just because other people are dying in the world. I'm sure many people that read this felt nothing, and that's fine with me. This was the Geekologie writer's attempt to vent on a matter that means something to him, and you slap him in the face. I especially like your statement about not joking when it comes to a mass murder/suicide. "I'd bviously(sp) only do it to those that deserved it. I do have some principles." It scares me to think that you believe you can judge those "deserving" of death... and you call us sanctimonious.
62. jeb223 - April 21, 2008 6:13 PM
Thank you, I never realized my Geekologie writer is a fellow Virginian!
63. AK - April 21, 2008 10:32 PM
Thank you for this tribute, Geekologie writer. It is important to remember the past and those whose lives were taken.
As for who cares about what and who is or is not a sanctimonious bastard...you people do realize that you're arguing on the internet...
Even if you win, you're still retarded.
