Apr 7 20083-D LED Cubes Are Out Of This World, Not Literally Though, They're Not Alien Or Anything

This 3-D LED cube was made by Chinese manufacturer Seekway and features a 16 x 16 x 16 grid of lights for a total of 4,096. That's a good amount. "The system is capable of displaying animations at up to 30 frames per second and each dot can be individually addressed for both color and intensity." There's a video of the cube in action after the jump, and I suggest you watch it and just vibe out for a little bit. You deserve it. If the boss comes by and asks why you're watching Youtube videos on the clock you just look him/her dead in the eye and tell them it's not Youtube, it's some computer virus you got when you were downloading porno. Works every time.

Where do you buy these? And how much?

It's like a screen saver, but without the computer.
At parties, it'd be neat if you could set these up and they'd vibe to music (like the Windows Media Player visualizations but better).
I wonder if upon stacking these, they can synch up and make a larger version-visualization than the individual one.
Either way, I want fourty seven of them and I want them yesterday. Coolest thing ever!

Quite welcome for the tip. Take this guys advice, the porno excuse works every time. I'm now a successful hobo with an honest annual salary of 50 cents thanks to it. :D

i keep having visions of this thing being present at a new years eve celebration, or on a dance floor, "saturday night fever" style. it's pretty cool. i wonder why this hasn't been done until now? it seems like it'd be pretty simple to make one, with the right tools and parts. it's not like leds are hard to engineer, ....or are they? i don't know.
good find.

I think this is a bad idea. I can just see freaks stuck for hours in their living rooms high on lsd or shrooms, rocking back and forth saying "what does it mean?" "They're talking to me I just know it!"
- on second thought, that's halarious. I need to buy one and give it to my cousin.
