Mar 18 2008Robotic BigDog Is Amazingly Lifelike, Scary, Headless, Awesome, Leggy, Strong
This is a new video of Boston Dynamics' incredibly mobile BigDog quadruped robot. The robot has gone through several modifications since its inception, and this is the new-and-improved version. As is evident from the video, the scary little bastard can now climb hills, jump, and carry more than 340 pounds of drugs over the border. Did I mention it looks too much like a real animal? Because it does. And I really did get sad when at 0:35 into the video the guy kicks the shit out of it to show off its self balancing skills. It made me want to punch that guy in the face. You can't just go around kicking robotic animals like that, it's cruel. Robots have feelings too.
UPDATE: It turns out robots don't have feelings after all. Which is actually good news, because I've been wanting to destroy this worthless Roomba for a while now. Take that you non-suctioning piece of crap. *beats with broom handle* HA HA, you can't feel that can you? Nope, because you're just a stupid little robot! *continues the beating, pieces start to break off* Oh my God I think I heard a whimper. *sobs uncontrollably clutching broken robot pieces to bosom*
The old video of the original BigDog after the jump.

that IS amazing
2. Windy - March 18, 2008 10:43 AM
I'm freaked out by it for some reason. It seems like it is being hurt. I kinda want to punch the guy who kicks it too. I have a feeling this video will be remembered when our machine overlords determine our fate.
3. SmokingGirl - March 18, 2008 10:47 AM
Why am I creeped out by this thing?
Is it because I get the feeling that there are actually midgets in there?
Is it because I saw a man kicking a robot and I felt bad for the robot aka midgets?
Or is it because I now have seen the fate of man...and it is the fact that we will be taken over by the little people. Gulliver's Travels now rings so true, so so true.

Damn, Thanks a lot Geekologie writer. I sent you these videos months ago, and I get no credit. I see how it is.
Anyway, yeah I found this neat.
5. Chris - March 18, 2008 11:16 AM
I'm pretty sure this thing was everywhere like 2 years ago as "Robot Mule"
6. Fedak` - March 18, 2008 11:46 AM
Is it me, or does the freaking buzzing just make you want to throw this thing off a cliff?
7. Amy - March 18, 2008 11:52 AM
I felt bad when it slipped on the ice.
8. Scott - March 18, 2008 12:27 PM
Some redneck is going to see this thing trudging thru the woods and think it's an alien....after he pisses his pants of course.
9. pakistanly - March 18, 2008 1:27 PM
i wish that thing had a d**k so i could s**k it.
:(
10. Amy - March 18, 2008 1:29 PM
Why would you want to sock a duck?
11. Scott - March 18, 2008 2:10 PM
#9 seems quite mad....
12. none - March 18, 2008 2:18 PM
that buzzing motor is incredibly annoying. did they use a weedwacker motor for this freaky dog thing. It's crazy to think it's been programmed to gain it's balance when on ice, or when almost being drop kicked.
i'm curious though, had he kicked it twice as hard and fallen, would it be able to get back up on it's own?
all in all, neat but freaky...
13. Erik - March 18, 2008 2:52 PM
I guess it's a good thing that we collectively feel bad for the robot when the guy kicks it. Maybe when we eventually have sexbots around, we'll treat them well for fear of them taking over the world.
14. Shoes - March 18, 2008 2:54 PM
I think the geekologie writer needs to post some bosom pics...
15. spiritkittykat - March 18, 2008 3:48 PM
I am scared. I agree with Windy re: the machine overlords thing. Oh and it should say at the end something more like: developed by Boston Dynamics and Defense advanced research projects agency to eventually come to your house of it's own accord and kill you...you know, because machines hate us now that they can think for themselves...
16. tmhs - March 18, 2008 4:56 PM
I think this thing creeps us out becuase it's life like enough for us to feel bad for it but NOT QUITE lifelike enough for us to want to pet it.
17. David - March 18, 2008 5:21 PM
The motion of the legs is absolutely terrifying!
18. Snoodle - March 18, 2008 6:14 PM
I feel badly for it when it's shoved over, and yet it's AMAZING how it can keep it's balance like that o.o! Also, it scares me an unholy amount for reasons I don't really understand...but it really is a marvel!
19. TheJak - March 18, 2008 7:18 PM
It looks like a giant fly! And the buzzing makes it worse! Im scared of it!
20. Lamey Lamerson - March 18, 2008 8:52 PM
Did anyone else laugh when it slipped on the ice and went sliding everywhere? That's a clip that should be sent straight to AFV.
21. Nelson Ribeiro - March 18, 2008 9:30 PM
Why is this a surprise to anyone? They've had this technology on Eternia since the 80's! Doesn't anyone remember when Man-at-Arms created Stridor for He-man?

Thanks for the nightmares tonight.
I keep thinking of that Simpson's episode where Bart jumps in the nerdy guy's transporter doo-hicky and gets turned into a fly-boy. He makes the same sound as this thing.
I'm totally creeped out and you guys who feel sorry for that walking rust-bucket are crazy. You'll get us all killed having feelings like that.
23. guate6 - March 18, 2008 11:16 PM
Thanks Geekologie writer. You're the best. Sorry for harassin' ya, you know you're my boy.

nothing really "new" about this. Check this out from 1933:

Anthropomorphism is amazing. It doesn't have a face or even a head, but any time the BigDog looked in danger of falling, I was rooting for it to be okay! I didn't want it to get 'hurt' because it looked like it was 'trying' so hard.
Guys, once the BigDog is self-aware and Googles itself, it will totally read all these comments, and I hope it then traces me and comes to my house for tea and cakes.
26. mr horse - March 19, 2008 4:25 AM
That is frigging awesome. Look at the legwork when it slips on ice. That's so humane it's scary. When it joggs up the hill it kinda looks like two guys bent over towards each other, one backing and one walking forwards, lol!
27. .Ben - March 19, 2008 9:38 AM
Does this remind anyone of something out of Silent Hill?
Freaks me the hell out.
28. Cyberwulf - March 20, 2008 12:24 AM
I almost expected it to turn around and attack the one who kicked it. Rather chilling, these advancements in technology... We shouldn't be creating robots that can move on their own, we should be using these robotics to enhance our own bodies to further the evolution of the human race through the use of technology.
29. Fallen - March 20, 2008 5:09 AM
@28
For some reason "The Borg" comes to mind...... hmm..... wander what that could be..... oh well, gimmi a robot arm so I can game when I sleep!
30. tom - March 20, 2008 11:23 AM
this robot looks like one person walking backwards and one walking forward pretty sweet tho looks sci-fi

32. tylerdurden - March 20, 2008 11:51 AM
Freaky as hell. Mostly because it's not a robot but 2 people in a suit, like those horse ones.
Stupid midgets scare me everytime :(
33. regent - March 20, 2008 2:43 PM
This thing is going to give me nightmares. Robotic doggy nightmares...
34. Brad - March 20, 2008 5:06 PM
Totally creepy yet totally cool at the same time.
35. Polly Pureheart - March 20, 2008 10:33 PM
Is it me or does this "dog" make you so freaked you don't know if you want to shit or go blind. I can't wait until they amp this up so it can run like 35mph and has a 50 caliber weapon strapped to it. Ah.. good times.

That is just brilliant, what you men have done is a master piece of art! Fantastic job!!
37. Matt - March 21, 2008 3:46 AM
Glad to see im not the only one freaked out by this thing. its totally awesome, but theres just something very alien about the way it moves, and the buzzing noise doesn't help. if we ever started mounting these things with weapons it would scare the shit out of me.
38. mr.e - March 22, 2008 2:37 PM
i agree. all hail our robot overlords. but seriously, this is sweet. not even the AT-AT moved this good
39. heather m. - March 22, 2008 11:04 PM
um, oh hell no?
when my boyfriend showed me this video, i literally had to cover my eyes and back away from the computer.
i've never been so alarmed in my life; this thing is f***ing creepy...
...yikes.
and its legs look like a fawn's when it is slipping around on the ice... oh dear lord.
::runs the other direction as fast as possible::
40. grant c - March 23, 2008 11:45 AM
LMFAO these comments are hilarious.
At the end of the video it shows the dog jumping over a 2 foot gap. The thing weighs like 250 lbs. scary!
I foresee this thing evolving in the next few years. sort of like the T-1 started out in terminator 3 and then we see what it really looks like in the flash backs in terminator 1 and 2.

44. John McDermott - March 25, 2008 5:32 PM
Okay, that thing's kinda creepy! It looks like a big bug. Big Bugs can lead to SKYNET!!!
45. REW - March 27, 2008 12:29 AM
The scariest part of that first movie is when the robot slips around on the ice.
46. silverdollar - March 27, 2008 6:58 PM
yea....i'm like the majority of you....i feel so sad for it when i slips on the ice. =[
47. Lokis - March 30, 2008 10:50 PM

50. Carl Toothman - April 4, 2008 7:30 PM
Our biological salvation begins here and now. With a dying planet, the human race must evolve into machines to make journeys deep into space, in search of a new home for the most durable bio remains of planet Earth. Our evolved machines, hopefully, will return to Earth now and then, to visit, in their crystal or disc shaped space ships. The spirit of life is eternal, regardless of the shell it wears, thanks to evolution. Love for life is the greatest force in the universe. The robot “dog” fights to remain upright because it doesn’t want to fail, “staying alive”. Survival of our species is depending on the survival of the robots.
51. Pro-think - April 4, 2008 8:29 PM
That will be even scarier with a .50 cal. and rockets mounted on top... Jeez.
52. Richard - April 8, 2008 1:07 PM
This thing is cool, the scary bit is that its being developed for DARPA. Whats gonna happen when they start putting guns on this thing and sending it off to war! There whurrring sound will be the sound of death..... anyways cool robot! :D i wonder what the retail price is?
53. Gez - April 8, 2008 7:22 PM
Disturbing.
It reminds me the woods scene in Evil Dead, when Ash is chased.
And that noise... is that a chainsaw?
Come and get some!
54. Teknogames - April 9, 2008 6:05 PM
is anyone else reminded of half life 2
55. tt - April 10, 2008 9:15 PM
its designed to carry battle supplies for for troops in Afghanistan.
56. Monketron - April 12, 2008 10:29 PM
this thing creeps me out because it doesn't have a head.
it looks like something from half-life.......
57. Matt - April 13, 2008 12:20 PM
clearly a dog in a robot costume.
58. Stoic - April 17, 2008 2:15 PM
And it's so stealthy and silent, too. Probably drop them into a combat zone and annoy the hell out of the enemy with the noise.
"Let's surrender. That thing is freaking me out. And the noise!"
59. prosper - April 18, 2008 3:03 AM
I'd say the first time I saw the dog I thought it looked like a fly! I like it the fact that it is versatile
60. Charlie43 - April 19, 2008 11:24 AM
My first impression was that it reminded me of a giant, wingless bee! Is that an attempt to look like fur on the contraption?
61. Keshia - April 25, 2008 3:27 PM
It's adorable... I want one :(
62. Mblunts - April 25, 2008 5:17 PM

TUR IT IS LIKE SOMTHING FROM SILENT HILL BUT HEY NOW ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS WORK ON THE OUT SIDE.... YOU KNOW MAKE IT PRETTY/ MAYBE LIKE A CRAWLING PERSON? OF A ROTTEN FLESH DOG?
67. Idalia - October 24, 2008 12:45 AM
It kinda looks like it belongs in the Silent Hill game or movie... whichever you wanna choose. Imagine seeing it in the middle of nowhere? And then imagine it programmed to find you. That's just not a good feeling...
68. rebel - October 28, 2008 1:54 AM
you guys feel sorry for this thing when it's kicked? what a bunch of nerdy pussies... all i want to do with this thing is beat the living shit out of it with a huge sledge hammer until it stops moving whatsoever. actually, i shouldn't have said "living shit out of it" - it is not living, so it only has a mechanical shit... why do humans always want to play like they're little gods? they want to create life... unbelievable...
