Feb 1 2008Poor Thing: Sports Car Has Identity Crisis

Apparently Rinspeed developed this vehicle long before their sQuba car, but it's just making its rounds on the internet, so here it is. The Splash is a little sports car (0-60 in 5.9) that, with the push of a button, turns into a little hydrofoil boat capable of 45 knots (~52 mph). It's powered by natural gas and there's no word on price or if they're even available. I really admire Rinspeed for their multipurpose vehicles, but it seems they can't think outside the land/water box. Try this one on for size Rinspeed - the Blastoff. It's a car and a rocketship. You can drive it to work or the fucking moon. It's got wheels and an engine like a car, but it also has hyper-thrusters and all that space technology stuff too. Yeah, and it's modeled after an old El Camino. Is that specific enough to secure a patent? I don't want anybody stealing my idea.
Another picture and a video after the jump.

If you watched Top Gear you would have seen this thing years ago!

You'd have to bring a change of clothes for that commute to France. And find some friendly types to pull your car in.

driving your car through salt water... am i the only one that sees some rust issues? You can cross the channel, but then you find your brakes rusted, genius

I <3 Top Gear (the Bugatti Veyron video gave me a chub, as well as the Enzo, McLaren F1, and the new Reventon).
Yeah I too understand the whole salt issue. I guess Rinspeed just isn't making the same quality stuff as before anymore.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could get a regular old car to look like this after submitting it to Pimp My Ride.
I am interested to see when they will come up with a boat...that also doubles as a car (that'd be neat).

(also)
Ok, so they had to drag that boat in...it can't do it itself I see. And I never quite understood the concept of getting cheap champagne to simply waste what you can and drink the rest. Perhaps they did this just for that moment, in which case, it leads me to believe the dude driving was French.
