Feb 22 2008Bookshelf Stairs Are Freaking Awesome

As I’ve mentioned before, I like books. So I was immediately drawn to this set of bookshelf stairs. As a matter of fact, I've been just sitting here staring (!) at them for ten minutes. So clever. While they may be a little difficult to clean, I really like the design. I really wish I had a stairway to literary heaven. Instead I have a ladder to a rented room in my uncle’s attic. It is neither literary nor heaven. However it is literally a haven. For rats.
Several more pictures after the jump.

Would I be right in thinking this is more a book-case you can climb, rather than stairs that have books in them?

i can imagine myself spending all my afternoons and evenings in that place, reading all kinds of books and drinking hot coco. WOW

I must say, this is awesome. Very space-saving.

Yeah, it all looks good until you slip down the nicely polished stairs with a load of books in your arm and realize a little late that there's no hand rail, and you end up in a mushy pile after gravitationally greeting the closed door at the bottom. But I love the idea, and books. Just needs some non-slip tape and a handrail...

what happens when you fall down the steps? does all the books fall on you and leave you buried in a heap of literacy?

I not only must have this, I will have this. Where there is a Home Depot, there is a way. I am going to put this in my earth sheltered house (as soon as I get one).

I'd expand a bit and leave a small room filled with windows at the top, thus having a stairway to a reading room. Imagine it... sun shining in, books all around, perfectly quiet... none of my damn kids running around. Heaven.

industrial design can often spark intense discussion of the personal opinions of the involved parties relating to the redesign of the involved subject. stair cases are a beautiful subject matter for upwardly bound individuals, and can often become a nightmarish, hellish gathering of matter in the case of the downward spiral.
you can use that if you want...
i like the stairs, but i'd definitely improve on the design in a few ways; handrail, straight edges on the stairs, grippy surface material, more porno...etc.

hahaha - anti blog campaigns - how lame.
um, i tend to spill my coffee in the mornings when i hit the stairs - so although i really dig the idea of my staircase being made of books, i worry about the coffee damage.

Oh my God. That is just freaking cool. Where can one put a staircase in a single level condo? hmmm......

I'm afraid I have to agree that it is more awesome looking than practical. Since the shelves continue along the sides I would be really tempted to fill them all the way and then when retrieving a book I'd lean waaaaaaay over until I tumbled or try to step on the teeeny tiny ledge just a little faaaarther..... I think you get the point.
For my tastes I've always been impressed with a wall of books 12 feet high and 20 feet long with a ladder on a rail that lets me access every book quickly and safely.
But thanks for the interesting pictures.

Cleaver storage, but seems dangerous, especially with irregular steps.

you'd have to actually be several stairs down to find a book at eye level. i think it would sort of a pain and rather claustrophobic after a while. but it looks beautiful in the pictures.

These pictures are just great so sorry if this question seems stupid, but what do you do about book height? I mean, how do you store boks that are not the same size? Do you have not-equal height stairs? Any clever solutins to that?
23. Just Build Stuff - January 8, 2009 5:33 PM
I think this is a great use of space that is otherwise wasted and it provides and interesting look. I wonder if there is insulation value in books. I looks like they have compensated for book height by laying tall books down on the sides.

This is truely an inventive idea who comes up with a set of stairs that you can store stuff on this could be an awsome entrance toa man cave.
