Jan 28 2008V-12 Engine Made Entirely Out Of Paper

This V-12 four-stroke engine was constructed entirely out of paper -- 1,978 pieces to be exact. Weighing in at a little over 3 pounds, it certainly ranks as one of the lightest V-12s around. It also ranks as the one most likely to cause a serious paper cut. Perhaps the most amazing part of the whole thing is that it works -- producing a 13.5RPM crankshaft speed via 2 AA batteries. Over two years in the making it truly is a work of art. Well, it was until I filled it with gas and produced a spark. Then it was truly a fireball.
Several more pictures and a video of the action after the jump.

Thanks to COLIN THE WITHGUSTO, who has the awesomest name ever, for the tip

must be fake. paper is way too delicate to work.

is it some sort of extruded liquid paper? I dont really see much use of this, is it merely art?

@3 Dick V -
how many times do I need to fold paper for it to become gold?
;)

#5: clever...though you should have included the clause "in half."
I think that this work of art is amazing, and the fact that it's a working model is even more impressive! I wonder what the displacement would be (if it were a real engine).

guate6 yes I did forget the in-half part, at least someone knew what I was getting at. It is rather interesting that it is a working model. Damn impressive origami, I feel the Japanese might be a little jealous

Sorry but that is fake. It's a 3D render. Can't anyone see that. It's glaringly obvious.

You reckon we could have that in English, please, you massive spastic?

@boredom
I think we all understood the "in half" to be implied.
but is there some hidden meaning to your answer of "8 times"?

On Mythbusters they folded a piece of paper in half 9 times and it created dark matter.

@boredom - I just realized that you must be one of the people who believes the old wives tale about not being able to fold paper in half more than 7 times, and hence the joke about "8". haha, but you're wrong. the key to folding paper more than 7 times is to always fold along the same axis, making the result a long, narrow strip, instead of a small cube-like object. and using a really long sheet of paper helps too.

I was only joking around, he asked how many and the last time I folded a paper in half 8 times it turned into gold. Guess you should have tried that instead of sticking to your same axis idea. Either way I got gold.

I didn't get the joke, and was wondering if there something about the number 8 (I know it's not the answer to the universe). Then I remember the myth about not being able to fold paper more than 7 times, and incorrectly assumed that that was the basis of your joke.
I'll try folding my paper your way, and see if I get gold.
btw, I was going for the alchemist joke (DV said that papers turns into steel), so it seems that we all had an off day, not properly getting anyone's jokes.

well I will say the reasoning behind the 8 was I was gonna say 7 because that's the answer for everything, I had an ex that watched Friends to much if you don't get the reference, but then I remember that myth so I just went with 8 as to not go along with the myth. My normal answer however would have been 7. Try it whenever you don't have an answer and it's amazing how often 7 works

Deep Sigh! Can't you "guys" stay on topic? You argue the semantics of each others comments. What do they have to do with the beauty of the "art" produced? It is amazing that this fellow took two years to build this paper engine. It alone is worth it's weight in gold.
Last I heard, paper can only be "folded" 8x's before it just bends instead of being a "true" fold. It doesn't matter how big the paper is or how long.
I dare "damn luddites" to make something, anything unusual and post it here for us to see and judge. Put your heart and soul into it because I am a "hard critic".
