Jan 25 2008Nautilus Home Theater Is Freaking Awesome

nautilus-1.jpg

Inspired by Jules Verne's classic novel, the Nautilus home theater is truly a work of art. It was designed by Dillon Works Inc. for Dallas-based dentist Randy Moran and his wife. It looks unbelievably awesome and is nearly 900 square feet. I just showed it to my girlfriend and told her I wanted something similar. "Yeah, too bad you're 20,000 Leagues Under Debt." "Well listen, I'm entering an intense land race called 'Around Your Fat Ass in 80 Days', and if I win then the prize money should be enough to cover it." And that, my friends, is what you tell someone when you want your privates bludgeoned with a Wiimote.

Several more must-see pictures and an equipment list after the dive.

A big thanks to Brandon, whose home theater blows this one out of the water, for the tip

How the f*** does a dentist, short of exclusively working for Triads afford this theater system?

First

not to sure mabye he saved money up or something it is pretty sweet looking tho. and my great ouncle was in 20,000 leagues under the sea he was one of the divers.

not to sure mabye he saved money up or something it is pretty sweet looking tho. and my great ouncle was in 20,000 leagues under the sea he was one of the divers.

All that money sunk (hah!) into a nice looking theatre, and then the cheapskate couldn't afford proper HiDef players and a HD projector... for shame.

In other news: shit, I should've studied to be a dentist.

Right because HD sources and projectors TOTALLY aren't plug and play equipment. He'll have to tear the whole thing down now and start over!!!!!

With a room that big I would have made the screen bigger. I have a 93 inch hi def projector on the wall and my house is only 10 feet wide.

#8 is a dumbass.

I'm a dumbass.

I really am a dumbass, I meant to type Nathan. Damnit.

#4, you should do your research before saying untruths. The InFocus 7200 IS a HD projector. What part of 1080p didn't you understand? Granted it's not as amazing as mine, which is also HD (his runs at 1000ANSI lumens, mine runs 3000ANSI lumens), but it's HD nonetheless.

Anyone who's run an HD DLP projector (at least a good one) knows that the definition is so awesome, that any difference with an HD player is negligible.

Very nice theater...the place is almost as big as the college apartment I moved in to back in the day :(

Oh My God!!!

The seats are totally too far away from the screen.
@ #1. Maybe he prescribes roids for sports players. After all a Dentist is a Doctor. Just don't let him near your balls!

Totally screwed it up by not putting fish tanks in the walls.

#1 just because someone is a dentist doesn't mean that's the only income they have.
#13 you are right.

Do you know for sure that there aren't fish tanks where the port holes are? Rez isn't high enough to tell. But you're probably right.

Regardless, this room is pimp and I can only hope to afford something like this - it's better than my bean bag chair and over the air TV. When I have company over we toss a quarter for who gets the chair and I keep the quarter after.

So I don't know if there's some kind of geek sense of humor I possess (along with the fine writer/s of this blog) that other people don't, but every time I read something to my wife out of a tech blog I find funny, she stares at me and says "I don't get it." Am I alone here?

I wanna see Leonardo sink with the Titanic in front row!

I'm a bit surprised to see all this new press on a theater that is now almost 4 years old! In case you missed it, we won the CEDIA Lifestyle Awards Best Home Theater Level VI...in 2005. Thanks for not being more harsh on the technology reviews...it was on the edge once, and still holds up nicely after several years.

#10 is right...we put in HD projection from the beginning (designs started in 2003). We weren't contacted for this article, so the fact that the Nautilus now sports a Sony Blu-Ray player is omitted.

#12...maybe you like looking at the gaps between the mirrors when you put 1280x720 on a 135" widescreen. I don't. The floorspace between screen and front row of seats is the peanut gallery...available for kids or others who don't care.

#13 is 1/2 right...aquariums (live or recorded) were part of the original proposal. Instead, there are undersea murals painted behind the portholes...no maintenance!

Glad you like it...this was a fun project.

Cameron mentioned his Great Uncle was a diver in 20,000 Leagues.

I built the World's first working Nautilus submarine and functional replicas of the diving suits, which I dive now in Hawaii. You can read about that on my website, Vulcania Submarine.

On my website I have a page dedicated to the Disney Divers of 1954. You can check that by scrolling down the Vulcania Submarine homepage and clicking on the link that says Disney Divers.

I am always seeking more information about the Disney Divers. I have gathered the names of eight of them which are on the Honor Roll of my Disney Divers page.

Cameron's comment leads me to ask:

What was your Great Uncle's name?

Is he still living?

Is there any way I can contact him?

Cameron, you could reply here; but better if you go to my website and use the email there to send me a message.

Thanks, and I hope to hear from you.

VBR,

Pat Regan
