Jan 11 2008Laptop Bookbag Finds WiFi Signals, Strength

Well we've seen watches and shirts that have WiFi detection capabilities, and now there's a more practical one -- a laptop bag. Made in a variety of styles (bookbag, messenger bag, luggage-style roll around), each bag has a little LCD readout on top that indicates when a WiFi connection has been located and displays its signal strength. The bookbag goes for 34,40€ (~$51). Or you can save the money and do what I do, which is walk around with your laptop out and open at all times. Sure I've broken several from dropping them, but I'll be damned if I'm caught wearing a ridiculous bag. . I mean, bags are for that crazy lady who pushes a shopping cart full of them up and down the street and smells bad. That’s why we call her the bag lady. And it’s not a positive connotation. Although I did talk to her when I was stumbling home drunk one night. I ended up slipping her the tongue. Yeah, until she bit it off and swallowed it. Romantic, I know -- I think we're soulmates.
thanks to Melissa, who is so so so so so beautiful, for the tip

Oh, I get it. You're supposed to wear it on the front, so you can walk around like a moron and watch the little display until you find a good signal, only to find that you've just wandered in front of an oncoming bus. Great! Where can I get one?

Oh look, I will be just like "damn luddites" and say "FAKE!"
Ok now that that's out of the way. So why are companies so into making wi-fi signal receptors, when most networks are encrypted anyway? Starbucks charges, schools charge (or you have to attend them), and houses/apartments usually have their networks locked...I still find this utterly pointless.

guate6, you've completely missed the point that all those networks exist because people use them. They may also like to find the best corner in Starbucks, the best tree to sit under on the school lawn, or how strong the signal is on the apartment roof. Techno-wankery, sure. But very cool techno-wankery.

This is very interesting...
I like it... you don't have to open your laptop to see if you have wireless connectivity :D
Nice!

There are plenty of places that have free wifi available (see Korea). Granted, I don't live in one, but these devices may come in handy if I did.

guate6 - so you're saying that I should be like every other moron and yell "first" instead? no thanks, I prefer my idiotic little shout-out. and I think it will eventually catch on, and everyone will be yelling "fake". new trends have to start somewhere.
I suppose the thing might be useful if you're driving around looking for a signal (trying to find a parking spot close to Panera Bakery) and have the bag on the seat next to you. assuming you don't start looking at it until you're at least in the parking lot (cause then you'll be driving the same as the stupid soccer moms in their suv's).
