Jan 22 2008Cliche Super-Villain T-Shirt Is Questionable

We posted the 56 Geek Poster awhile ago, and here comes something similar -- the League Of Cliche Evil Super-Villains t-shirt. As you can see it's a shirt featured cliche super-villains. You've gotta admit, it would look good hanging on a rack at the thrift store. They run $15-$17 from Threadless, depending on the style of shirt you want. I actually just posted this because I've been getting lots of fan mail from beautiful women asking if I'm really as handsome as I seem. Well I am. If you look at the picture there and imagine a face 1/3 Dark Priest, 1/3 Evil Genius, and 1/3 Evil Ninja, you'd pretty much have me. Except I wear a top hat over my ninja gear. You know, for extra class.
EDITOR'S UPDATE: I've seen the Geekologie writer before and he doesn't look like that. He's more a cross between Butch Henchwoman and Brain Man but way, way uglier. Oh, and the chick he's dating looks like the Bog Creature.
GEEKOLOGIE WRITER UPDATE: He's got me.

It seems to me like this shirt started out with one guy saying, "Hey, you know what would be cool? A shirt with cliche villains!" And another guy going, "Yeah! We could put pictures on there for each one". But after they were done, they went, "Huh, doesn't look as cool as it did in my head... but we spent so much time on it we might as well try and sell it." "Yeah, good idea though. Wanna smoke again?"

#2: Actually it's voted on by thousands of people and the designs with a combination of good scores and a lot of people marking it as wanting to purchase it get printed. But, you know, good theory there.

#1...hey at least it's different from your usual
I'm thinking that #2 is more accurate than the "thousands of people" who vote on it...At least for this particular shirt.

Considering no one has ever broken a 4 on that site, this is a relatively high score.

Ugg, this is really bad. Why not just print, "Hey, remember cartoons and comics from your childhood? Cool." How about league of cliche t-shirts.
adult swim is rolling its collective cyclopean eye.

I kinda like the shirt myself. And I noticed that some of the characters are already featured in Jonathan Coulton songs.
Mad Scientist / Evil Genius = SkullCrusher Mountain
Gangster Puppet = Creepy Doll
Evil Henchman = SkullCrusher Mountain
Evil Robot = Chiron Beta Prime

There are so many things that make this shirt... terrible. Aside from the Red Skull, how many "evil skull" villains can one conjure? Or "gangster puppets" for that matter? It doesn't seem very cliche to me, just stupid.
Also, "seductress" is simply a ripoff of old-school Catwoman, sort of like "lab monster" is just Frankenstein.
It would have been enough to be poorly conceptualized or poorly executed; instead, this shirt has upped the bar by being both.
