Dec 10 2007Toyota's Pod-Car Thingy With Fancy Lights

wack-car-thing.jpg

Toyota recently displayed a new concept vehicle they've been working on. This is what it looks like -- a lounge chair that will suck your brain out while you're cruising. With lots of neon-ish lighting thrown in for good measure. The thing stands upright at slow speeds and then reclines at higher ones. You can even adjust the color of the thing to whatever suits your fancy with the push of a button. Apparently it can drive itself on special highway lanes in Japan. No word if those 'special' highway lanes are kin to the 'special' bus I used to ride to school, but if they are you'll probably have to wear a helmet.

Two more pictures of the thing showing its colors, along with a video showing transformation, etc. after the jump.

Nice!

It's nice to see companies pushing the bounds of design and innovation, but I wish they'd occasionally put some of these prototypes into production. The fundamental properties of the automobile have yet to experiance the dynamic revolution typified by other transportation technologies. Let's face it: As hightech as any new car is, it's still based on antiquated technological mechanics that were invented before our great-grandparents were born. I'm not saying I want to ride around in THIS thing, looking like a pimped-out Stephen Hawking from the year 2050. But some of the other concept cars out there do have a lot of potential.

By the way, did anyone else pick up on the similarity of the above concept car with this:

Its the same f***ing thing, only slower!

I'd noticed the similarity too. I'm guessing someone high up at Toyota broke their legs and spend a few days in a hospital bed and got really inspired.

"Bed goes up, bed goes down."

It's like these Japanese car manufacturers have been trying to make an automobile that turns on the spot (like that one that had the "R2" unit, and that other one they made that did a similar thing). I hope these things hit the US soon, they look awesome...I hope they're made of kevlar, carbon fibre and plexi-glass...the indestructible automobile of awesomeness.

I like this! It's awesome! It's the future!

heeeeeeeelllll yea thats wat the f*** im talkin about give me it bitch
