Dec 24 2007Popular Mechanics Digs Aptera Electric Car

We reported the Aptera and its 300mpg claims back in September, and now Popular Mechanics magazine has had the chance to drive one and they say the thing is legit. The all electric version is slated for release in 2008 and will cost around $30,000. The hybrid 300mpg model will be out by 2009. If all goes well the company plans on a four-wheeled model capable of sitting up to five people hitting the streets in the not-so-distant future. And you know what else is going to be hitting the streets soon? Me. I'm so poor I'm going to have to start selling myself again. Sad, I know. I'll be on the corner of 4th and Main. You can't miss me, I'll be the one with the assless chaps and chef's hat. Mention you're a loyal reader and receive a 2-for-1 special.
A couple more pictures and several videos, one of which is Popular Mechanics' review, after the jump.

I think the Aptera is neat, I do hope that the oil companies don't get involved with it at all and that it pwns. On another note, it almost sounds like the jetson's vehicle.

I'm following this closely, but I'm afraid Guate may be right - the oil companies will sabotage this if Aptera tries to take it mainstream, which it appears they are.

Aye, while I hope it doesn't happen, I feel it'll suffer the same fate as the EV1 :(

Im a loyal reader... LOL! now seriously, the car is one incredible machine, but I hope we DO get to see it on the streets soon, and its not just another of those heartbreaking unfulfilled promises that makes you cry a river

Aptera looks like a awesome vehicle, especially to drivers with "green" heart and mind. Knowing the perennial environmental issues we have been facing and the economic unpredictability of the nation, not to forget to mention the gas prices, this vehicle is a possible solution to minimize the deterioration of the environment and saving $$$ for gas. I can't wait until I drive this vehicle.
Go green!

This vehicle looks so awesome! Aptera is a vehcicle of the future to those with "green" mind and heart. Knowing the perennial environmental dilemma we are all facing and the unpredictable economic situation of the nation, not to forget the ever-pricy gasoline, this vehicle may be a possible solution to minimize the enviromental hazards and economic imbalance by saving $$$ in gas.
I can't wait 'till I drive this flightless-bird-insect looking vehicle.
Go Greeen!!!

People whine about exporting American jobs and dollars and those same people go out and buy a Japanese car thereby exporting both. If this is made in America I'd buy it.

Here we have a chance to compete and contribute. Love the entire idea and product. I hope to stay fit and endure the waiting line.

Amazing, I love it. I really hope it works out, The reason that EV1 dies becuse it was WAY to early for its time.

It needs either a normal or hammerhead shark paint job.
