Dec 20 2007Disappearing Car Doors: Sure, Why Not?

We posted the 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII Rolling Door Concept back in July, and now there's a company out there that's working on bringing the technology to new cars. If you're not familiar, it's a system in which the door slides under the car when opened. Based on their website I'm a little skeptical, but you never know. They show the Mark VIII and some old truck, but nothing new. They claim they'll have a fully operational concept vehicle available shortly. So I wouldn't place an order until after then. And even then I don't know if I'd place an order. The door is what keeps all my McDonalds wrappers and other trash in the car. If the door disappears then it will all fall out. I'll just be sitting there in a pair of my girlfriend's lacy panties and people will think I'm a litterbug.
Very questionable promotional video after the jump.
thanks to Robb, a man women find irresistable, for the tip

If you're going to go to the effort of putting on a fake English acent, at least try and pronounce words properly. Coupe is 'koo-pay,' not 'coop'! It completely shatters the illusion that this vid was filmed in some none-existant part of rural middle-Englandshire where everyone wears beige chinos and the air is filled with 18th century chamber music...

Kind of pointless in bad weather, like when you're freezing your ass off and outside waiting for your friends to pick you up for a night full of debauchery and the car rolls up and you get in and let ALL the heat out of the car =bunk

most important thing they keep forgeting about this concept - what the fuck happens when you dont have power in the car, how do you get out/in or what happens when you get t-boned and the stupid doors all bent in? then what? use the jaws of life to cut the whole fucker out?

"Automobiles today still use the same door principles as demonstrated by this nineteenth century Benz Coupe..."
Um, no. Let me name just a few vehicles that defy this introductory statement: Enzo Ferrari, McLaren F1, Virtually most Lamborghinis, Koenigsegg (any), DeLorean DMC, not to mention vans and cars with sliding doors. Hell, even this car has doors that defy that statement:

#14, did you not watch the video? They're there on both sides.
On and another thing I forgot to mention, is that they said they took off the B-brace (Though I'm sure that's not its technical name). This is the brace that helps the roof not collapse into the car. So unless they're planning on adding roll-cages, I'd say the automotive industry is NOT going to be making these any time soon.
