Nov 28 2007Keyless Keyboard: Wack, Uses Orbs, WTF!?

Sure the QWERTY keyboard may have some issues that need to be addressed in the long run, but I have a hard time believing the OrbiTouch Keyless Keyboard ($400) is going to be the peripheral of the future. Sure it's a far cry from the stupidity of this keyboard, but that doesn't mean anything. How does it work you ask?
Each dome slides into one of 8 zones to type a character. The domes do not twist. Either dome can slide first or move both at the same time. Domes slide toward the center of their respective color or character zones -- not directly at the character. Slide the right dome to the zone of the character you want to type; slide the left dome to the color of that character.
So that's how it works. I still don't get it. May be a great idea for people with disabilities or others with limited motor skills, but for an everyday user? I doubt it. I can burn a QWERTY keyboard with upwards of like 10,000 WPM. Which is one thing I couldn't find out about the OrbiTouch -- how many words per minute can someone prolific with the device type? I couldn't find it on their website. Because it's 10.

I'd rather chop my arms off and use my nose to type...

Great I can't wait till one of the fat women in my office want one of these installed. That should be exciting. Especially after they ask how to use it.
And whats with fat women only getting "Carpal Tunnel" from mouse use. I think its just that they have too much fat on their arms and there wrists disintegrates. They should drink more milk or something. LOW FAT MILK!! For gods sake!!

wow, 2nd post is the first place f***in loser!
oh, and use google, you'll find WPM info about this new tool.
"The KeyBowl FAQ states that the fastest typing speed yet recorded on the orbiTouch is 42 words per minute, with an average of about 30–40 wpm. (The average typing speed using a traditional Qwerty keyboard seems to be in the 38–40 wpm range.) For someone who averages about 83 wpm with a top speed of 103 wpm, such speeds would be extremely frustrating. On the other hand, if the choice is typing painlessly at 30–40 wpm or not typing, the orbiTouch would seem a reasonable compromise."
this seems really clever for people with any sort of disabilities... interesting concept.

It doesn't have real function buttons, or arrows, or a 9-key (for those of you who don't know, that's a name given to the set of numbers and math signs on the right of a keyboard)...it's designed perhaps for use with DOS or something similar. It's definitely not even remotely close to trying to be a gaming keyboard (where as we know, we use more than one button at a time). It may work for some, but not for most...oh and the wpm on this thing, I say that's BS...until they have video proof of more than one person, I'm remaining incredulous.
