Nov 13 2007Helium Balloon Lights Are Ridiculous, Mylar

The World View lighting system from PID are helium balloons that hold up some lights.
The light source consists of 35 ultra strong diodes hanging on a helium balloon, with adjustable floating height. Available in two models, one with cord and one limited edition powered by rechargeable batteries. It's available in white or metallic. The batteries for the limited edition lasts for about 42 hours and the recharging of the batteries take 8 hours. After filling the balloon with helium it will last 2-3 weeks, after that it needs refilling.
They cost $1,000 each. So, um, yeah. You could make some yourself though for about $10. And then buy a helium tank to fill them up when they hit the floor. Although the price of helium is on the rise. That's why I stick to my gas of choice, nitrous oxide. It may not float a balloon but it does makes you feel like you're on a rocket ship in outer space, complete with sound effects.

"complete with sound effects"
Nice.

If they were cheap they'd be awesome for a night time birthday party.

I'd like to hang the neighbor's kids from them, and give them a flashlight to light the place up.

Nitric Oxide is the stuff in our [male] bodies that expand our arteries and increase blood flow to certain parts of our bodies to prepare us for what is about to...happen (see: it makes erections and preps for sex).
These suck, I can do better with my underwear. Farting, making sounds with my mouth, and an LED keychain light.

Does anyone know why helium wears off or leaks out? Seriously, its not like the balloon causes so much pressure the helium fuses into heavier elements. I guess there would be a better way to find out why, but I just want to see who knows why.

Yeah, just like I thought, smaller elements can travel through smaller spaces. Continue.

@ 7: And nitrOUS oxide is the gas that dentists and doctors mix in combination with oxygen to relieve pain... and make you giggle.

8: ballons are semi permiable membranes. the ballon is subject to the laws of thermodynamics and overtime will reach a state of equilibrium. Passive diffusion through the ballon membrane to compensate for the lack of Helium out side the membrane of the ballon. B/c there is a high concentration of Gas A in the ballon - equilibirum wants to let some out so that both sides of the ballon will have "equal" amounts.

#11, I know the difference between nitric oxide and nitrous acid. Aside from laughing gas, it's used in cars to give large boosts or power and acceleration, commonly called NOS or "spray." I simply wanted to throw that other comment out there.

The balloons are not even helium filled. As it can be seen in the picture (balloon on the right) they fill it up with air and then hang it from the ceiling. This justifies the price, because as you do not have to refill it every other day, they sell less units. Therefore they have to devide their costs on coffee and drugs among less, but sate of the art units.

Is it a kind of light that looks like that you have a real moon lighting if you have a cool garden party at night? how do you link the electricity? by cable or gas?
please more detail
