Nov 27 2007Exoskeleton Is Wicked Nasty, I Need One
Utah based Sarcos spent six years developing this exoskeleton bodysuit capable of giving an average person superhuman strength. I must admit it looks pretty bad-ass. The suit mimics everything you do, making it way easier to lift and move heavy objects. In the future the company wants to make the suits autonomous, allowing a person to remove the suit and have it act as a humanoid robot. Which sounds like a bad idea for something that has giant hooks for hands (don't touch your privates). I kept waiting to see if the suit could run through a brick wall or throw a car, but the video didn't show. Meaning it definitely can. Awesome.

Meh, I'm not impressed. I saw a video for a competitor's suit that kicks WAY more ass than this one. The video's over at http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/ironman/
I mean, this one doesn't even have a cool paint job! WTF!!!

Man, the military sucks. Don't they understand that we need huge Godzilla-sized mech suits to really give our boys out there the advantage they need?
3. adam - November 27, 2007 10:16 AM
that is bad ass
4. boredom - November 27, 2007 10:17 AM
well I will say it's a cool ass suit but anything and I mean ANYTHING you give to a soldier better be damn rugged because them boys can break everything, and they break things in the most creative ways too. Cool suit but I doubt it would last in the field

I am pretty sure things like this have been around for a lot longer, I remember seeing something like that a few years ago in a news clip from Japan. Nurses were using them to lift patients in and out of beds in the hospital.

If there was *ever* a believable reason to join the army, this is it.

Good on them. This is extremely practical: people with partial paralysis would be enabled and people who do hard physical labor for a living would not only be more productive but also avoid injury.
There is always the inevitable abuse - where once you observed three city workers standing around watching the fourth one work, now you will have four yahoos fing off.

This thing looks awesome. I want one!
11. Ok - November 27, 2007 1:39 PM
what a waste.
one day the samurai will return and challenge the modern militarys of the world. exoskeletons are no match for samurai sword. fire power is no match for true honor. war will be no match for peace the day that follows our nuclear holocaust. lets go back to swords....

Some people are bone-idol.
I welcome the exoskeleton suits. Pretty well fucking done in my opinion.

One word, Halo.
the future model ideas look just like the MJOLNIR Mark IV armor which does the same thing, just on a much greater level.
15. Ok - November 27, 2007 4:24 PM
hardly an exoskeleton. its just structure reinforcement. cowardly to wear one. though hardly fit for combat at this point in time, why put faith in the complexity of tehcnolgies when all we need is human will power and a samurai sword! There is no honor to be had in wearing these things when your enemy carries only a gun and is only an enemy because the king says so, you pawns. Think for yourselves! Never forget the art of the SAMURAI!
there is no room for lazy people in the idolized world of the samruai....

^^^ OK
You're a fucking retard. Go back to samurai land.
17. Ok - November 27, 2007 5:34 PM
i would yield to your presence if your presence was presentable, but as you are my sword is this and that is tha last you have and will ever see. the only land of the samurai is within our hearts. i encourage all my students to seek this place and study within it for our lives are short but our banner flys under honor, respect and peace ,unless these things be threatened, will reing over all time.
cowards

OK-
well you enjoy your sword as some crazy jihad is running at you with a bomb strapped to his chest stopping feet away from your ability to "wield" your sword and BOOM! your dead....or hundreds of feet away with a sniper rifle and bang your dead...have fun with your sword...LOL the sword is good and all unless your enemy is up to date with their weapons!
Anyway this thing is cool....probably still decades from actually being useful, but cool nonetheless!

20. Ok - November 28, 2007 3:43 AM
sarah, why would someone do that to me? the middle east, central america, south america, vietnam, africa....among others, have more valid reasons to be pissed off at the USA then they ever would with me. i dont exploit countries and their people or engage in clandestine war nor do i overtly invaid countries under a bs pretext or support a country by enlisting in a military who does. read read read sarah, read all viewpoints and keep up to date with it all- learn logic and philosophy --learn to think rationally --then develop your own opinions. i am a samurai, and my tactics are beyond your comprehension so i will not tell you what i am capable of when distance is a factor but do not worry about me young sarah, i am more than capable of defending myself from danger, half the battle is how we think and what situations we put ourselves in........ if you ever learn to think, and would rather settle our differences by a duel, i'll be waiting.

>OK> (this is to the pseudo-samurai)
It seems as though you are suffering from a variety of delusions, including an obsession with the samurai. Now I have a great deal of respect for the samurai, and I'm sure we've all seen Cruise's performance in "The Last Samurai," and all which was nice, but you don't need to pretend to try to remotely be as amazing as a true samurai. To belittle and right out demean others' projects and ideas is quite unnecessary. You speak of nature, you speak of peace, but then you speak highly about the samurai who were warriors (noble at that). Warriors are not peace-keepers. The implication of samurai leads to the implication of China. Now you can't say that China hasn't fought wars with ill intentions, because you'd be wrong. You tell others to read and learn, when it is yourself who are not, and will never be a true samurai.
Samurai aren't to boast or debase, deride, or disparage the thoughts and opinions of others. If they are slapped, they remain calm. If they are hit, they turn the other cheek. You speak of samurai but know nothing about nobility or humility. I myself am not from the US and I do not support the war the US is in, nor its originators. I do support new technology. You speak of philosophy and logic. I tell you my ignorant, ill-mannered individual. You know nothing of philosophy or logic; mostly it's obvious by reading what you write. In fact, if you were to claim you were a real samurai, which you are not, you wouldn't be posting comments on a geek site. I challenge your wit, masculinity, and ability to fight in combat. I guarantee you, that I will supersede you and outdo you in every and any way...
So in short, it is you who needs to grow up and shut up.
24. sarah - November 28, 2007 4:46 PM
ok- LMAO OMG you're cracking me up!! hahahha
25. automatic - November 30, 2007 9:13 AM
Funny... Ghandi didn't need anything but his will, heart and mind. It's a shame that all of that technology and intellectual power can't be devoted to something more productive and beneficial for all mankind. To quote a dear friend, "fighting for peace is like f*cking for virginity".
26. sarah - December 4, 2007 3:59 AM
well actually you can't create virgins if you don't fuck and you can't create peace if you don't fight for it.....so I don't see the problem here :-D

This suit looks like it won't be used ONLY for combat. It looks like it could be used for fire fighitng, upholding the law, emt staffs. sure, it might go to combat, but I would say that it probably won't be it's only use.
The reason this would go to combat is that war is profitable. it's a fact that everyone has to agree with. not a business that is morally correct 100% of the time, but it is profitable.
As for the samurai, samurais' spirit depended on who weilded the sword. There are numerous tales of samurai's exploting other for personal gain. Samurais have been in massacres of peasants and villagers. Samurai's also defended people.
Not all soldiers in iraq are gonna be guantanamo bay guards, and they aren't all going to be rambo. Some are heroes, some will be corrupt. That's the variety of the human race.
Sure there may be people that are going to exploit the machine suit for personal gain, but there will be people to use it to save lives. Hell, there may be superheroes with this suit (hehe, iron man.)
The idea of the samurai, such as the philosophies, are still alive today. But they also speak of internal peace rather than insulting people just to boast. You don't create peace by calling other people wrong or cowards. A samurai that boast how wrong other people are, are usually dead.
Wannabe Heroes are usually the bad guys that boast about inner strength, and use their ability for revenge, hate, personal gain, wealth, false pride.
Real heroes die by protecting others. By defending what they believe with their lives.
Wise men know when to hold their tongues, and fight with their minds and thoughts, not with bragging and insults.
Sure, you maybe able to wield a sword. But your mind isn't a samurai. you are a man, with just a sword. The hand that wields it is wielded by a weak mind.
PS. Aren't samurais stoic?
28. Mrhoohaa777 - December 11, 2007 1:09 PM
As for peace. Peace will never be just by having the idea. Sure you can defend the ideas of peace, but each culture will have a different concept of said peace.
Peace cannot be obtained with a fist nor can it be defended with an open hand. It takes heart to win peace. But there is never going to be an absolute peace. There will always be clashing and hate.
If you want peace, you don't have to fight to obtain it. You shouldn't destroy in order to obtain it.
most people want peace on a global standard, but in the micropolitical, there is still hate.
if you want peace, start small, help children, help elderly, offer a hand to a person that has fallen.
In the way of peace, on has to be ready to defend themselves. But not defend in anger. That is pretty much the equivilent of attacking.
jeez...I've been watching one too many jet li movies...
but hey, I feel cool.
