Nov 26 2007Electric Guitar Laptop Mod Is Pretty Sweet

Ben Lewry, a guitar and computer lover, modded a laptop to fit inside an electric guitar. It's called the LCDetar. Which is not the best name, but far better than Guitard. The laptop inside features a trippy music visualization program that responds to whatever you're playing on the guitar. Good job Ben, the thing looks sweet. As a matter of fact, it may be the best laptop mod I've ever seen. Well, except for the ukulele one I made last year. Ho ho, gotcha Ben! Ukulele laptop FTW. Better luck next time buddy.
A couple more pictures and two videos of it in action after the jam session.

I like the visualization part, but is it really practical?

Ok, after watching the videos, it looks neat. Perhaps it is practical.

Anybody have an idea of what visual program he's using?
A lot of the animations looks to be quite similar to "Milkdrop" which is a standard visualization plugin which comes bundled with Winamp these days. It's pretty trippy, i've spent 8 hours plus on trip sessions just starting at it, with tears being brought to my eyes because of how powerful and overwhelmed i was at the time.
Quite a few of those animations i wasn't familiar with tho, so i wasn't sure if he's using the same program or what. I'd definately like to kno more.

Its milkdrop allright, maybe a newer version than you have or with an extra expension pack. Still awesome

Looks like it could be cool, but I think it would do better with personalized visualizations made specifically to pick up guitar sounds because it looks like the visualizations are always in motion most of the time regardless of whether he's playing or not. Very cool Idea tho.
Incidentally has anyone seen the guitar that Matthew Bellamy from the band Muse sports? It has an LCD screen with various colors on it at the bottom of the body and when he rubs his pick against it, the screen picks up the pick scratches and makes sounds based on it. Anyhow, I thought it would be cool if the LCD screen was touchscreen and he could get it to do that.

there is no better way to get a stiff neck than to look straight down at your screen while you massacre 80's hair metal...

OMFG! THIS THING IS THE SHIT! I WOULD SO BUY IT! NOT! Although it looks cool, I wouldn't waste money when there are more famous guitars to be had. Screw you all.
