Oct 1 2007Man Has Death Wish, Does 130.7 On Bike

world-record-bike.jpg

Markus Stoeckl broke the World Speed Record for mountain bikes, topping out at 130.7 mph. Down a mountain. In the snow. "The super speed antics took place on a 2000m stretch at a 45 degree run in the Chilean Andes. To prevent his helmet from fogging up, Mr. Stoeckl had to hold his breath for the entire 40 seconds it took to complete the distance." So, yeah. Apparently Mr. Stoeckl has no respect for his life. The last time I saw a giant red penis doing 130 mph I was masturbating and so hopped up on drugs that I ended up doing permanent damage to my unit.

The record breaking video after the jump.

sweet

How the Hell do you stop??

that was a) boring, and b) boring.

it's the Andes, by the way... u know, the chilean "Alps"

Wow.

Is it just me, or wouldnt've he gone faster if he actualy peddled?

I cycled well fast down Pwllycrochan hill once.

i actually hold the world land speed record on a unicycle....i didn't use a mountain though, i just pedaled as fast as a could.....i only got up to 129mph : (

That's pretty crazy...I thought my bike was fast when I took my 2007 Trek Portland and pedaled fast (we have too many traffic lights here so I can't reach my full potential yet), and I made it to 34mph on a straightaway...well perhaps a 2 degree slope down, but it wasn't much. I want to go fast!

biking down slopes can be oficially recorded as speed ???
why not a level road ???

You can't pedal at those speeds because you can't turn your legs round fast enough.

A 53x11 gear ratio (about the best you can get) at a cadence of 150 rpm (about as fast as you turn your legs round) with a 29" wheel works out at 62.4mph.

You pedal furiously at the top to build up speed until the gear spins out and then concentrate on aerodynamics.

Kinda already knew that, but Nick taught me the more in depth explanations there. I learned something today. Thanks. :D
