Oct 4 2007Chair Is Opposite Of Humpty Dumpty

Max Dean and Raffaello D'Andrea have created a chair that breaks apart, and then puts itself back together again -- slooowly. The first part of the clip is sped up 2x, but it still takes about two minutes for the reassembly to take place. The chair is controlled by two computers, has 14 motors, and 2 gearboxes to make it all possible. I'd like to see the sorry little bastard put himself back together after I take a chainsaw to a few of those legs and maybe bash the seat a few times. Not so tough now, are you robot chair? I didn't think so. I win.

FIRST!! Bee-yotch!

That was fucking stupid. And so was the chair.

Holy shit that is useless.

It's not particularly useful in itself but there are some important issues behind it.

There's lots of people doing research into similar ideas about self-repairing machines. If your robot breaks whilst it's exploring a different planet then it's a bit hard to send round someone to repair it.

As per self-repairing robots, maybe I'm being a little to literal, but if it breaks in predefined places that are designed to re-connect then it's not really broken is it?

If it whips out a torch welder then I'll be impressed, and to damn scared to sit on it.

Wow, yet another useless invention under the belt of science.

i want one of those

Ya this is one of those projects that exist simply to exist. I mean it has very little useful purpose - not unlike myself. It's not really broken, but consists of parts that are meant to be disconnected in specific spots, then it figures out where they are and puts them back on. Ok, hard to accomplish, but for guys like this so is getting laid - and at least that would earn a high five.

Let the time of the self-replicating death robots begin!!

Wow... now people can suicide themself without any help...

This is absolutely useless. Although, it would be kinda cool for a practical joke. Make your friend sit on it, then when it breaks apart you get to laugh for a few minutes. And hey, when the thing puts itself back together again, well its just ready for the next dumbass who sits in it. Its like a practical joke for lazy people.

People who post "FIRST" make me want to shove robot chair legs up peoples asses.

The most incredible thing about this video was that the audience clapped.

It sounds like it's a menacing chainsaw... o.o"

All of you who consider this useless have no idea of the implications this has for the future of computer science and robotics.

Wow, this is almost as much fun as when we first saw the Cornell Robotic Chair...... around a year and a half ago... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNIz1lg2_AQ

This has SO many uses!!

Imagine inviting Kim Jong Il or Ahdeminijad (?) over to a dinner at the White House.

Have a set mahmoud, says Pres. Bush, nudging Condi Rice's arm ;-)

Then when dinner is to be served, whamo! you bust down the chair via remote, proving USA is A-OK!

Then to prove our superiority, the chair puts its self back together while A-Jad sits there whimpering like a little girl.

there are children literally starving right now all over the world and this is what we are concerned with.....

This robot is useless, yes. The "ramifications," well...I'm sure the technology can be used for good...or maybe not...but you want to see something amazing? Check this robot out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3W8dm5JxFc
