Sep 24 2007USB Mouse Jiggler Is Very Dumb

Wiebetech is selling an amazing new USB device. It's called the Mouse Jiggler, and it costs $30. If you can't tell from the name, it's a USB dongle that makes your mouse jiggle. That way the screen saver doesn't kick in. It is very stupid. They come in fast and slow jiggling versions. I know what you're thinking, "What about someone like me that desires medium jiggle?" Well my friends, you're out of luck.

It's for Forensic applications. If the Cops need to sieze a live system and do live forensics they need to have a way to keep the screen saver from kicking on while they transport it to the lab for processing. Hence, a device that keeps the mouse moving. That or it's so you can change your mouse to a dinasour and watch him walk aimlessly around your desktop....why do you think they are extinct.

or maybe it is to prevent the screensaver from popping on and interrupting the display of pornography during a long self-abuse session, where possibly both hands are occupied. I don't know why they call it self-abuse, i happen to love it.

Or, you could, I dunno, turn off the screen saver?

dammit, no medium jiggle.
the only purpose i found remotely useful from the product page's explanation is the prank one.

Who are these f***wits who sit at a board table and give out these ideas?! Worse still is people will buy it, probably idiots who have never gone to Start> Control Panel in their life.

Apparently this is the reason for this piece of crap-
"Any time we don't want a screen saver to come on," the IT guy replied. "Which is more often than you'd think. Many Computer Forensics professionals swear by these to keep a password dialog box from popping up on a seized computer, so they can gather evidence. They come in handy when we're trying to download an update for a computer. Even though office policy requires our workstations to have a screen saver - they can mess up an installation.""
Still seems useless to me

that stuff is worthless there is already a program that can do it without having to stick a usb dongle in and its free and only 332kb. but it is only for mac so maybe this is the windows version.
you can check it out here

Many of you obviously have never worked in a server environment. If your admin has the system locked down to password protect every five minutes, you find yourself logging in every time you're AFK. Oh, and the control panel is locked as well, so you can't turn off the screen saver. Don't label people as naive or stupid for buying a product that you deem ridiculous. It may pan out that you don't know as much as you thought you did. Take a few minutes away from the porn sites and learn something.

Don't judge this device because you don't really see the intended purpose.
It's a really useful device. At school, you only get a user account and the computer is set with screen saver and log-out after idling for some time.
If you are displaying a page that takes long to read (for example formula sheet or a particular mathematical proof) it's annoying to get the screen saver kicks in or the computer log off.
I have a class where the teacher likes to take his time explaining the slides... and the annoying screen saver always activate. He has to walk back to the computer table and move the mouse.
Before judging, use your imagination and think of any situation where it can be useful (brainstorming). Don't just say it's stupid because it does not apply to you... you may otherwise look stupid.

Or you could turn off the screen saver. Seriously, there's no purpose for them because screen-burn has not been an issue for years. It's kind of silly for companies to require them. Not a major deal, just pointless.

Sometimes you cannot turn of the screen saver in business environments.
Another use, keeing the IM status from showing you away or idle because you are on a telecon and not using you computer.

This is VERY useful. I work from home. I'm on conference calls with netmeeting open for HOURS. I can't do anything else while the conference call is going so if I plug this in it'll keep my screensaver from coming on. When my screensaver comes on Communicator logs me as 'away'. My screensaver/control panel/etc is locked down by work. I can't even double click the time in the bottom right corner to see the date...it's that locked down. When I'm 'away', my boss think's i'm slacking off. So, rather than manually jiggling the mouse every few minutes to keep the screensaver from coming on, I can use this thing and go sit in front of the TV for 8 hours and get paid! So yes, Alexandro has it right-THINK about the application before you look stupid-you're probably the guy who had sold squares when the wheel was invented...

I'm very grateful to be able to buy this device. Where I work in Washington, the security pros are very aggressive. Every computer in the building, about 2,000 are screensaver/password protected, and with very limited exceptions. When I do my job, the computer does not recognize that I am using a connected USB device, even though the hard drive is running software for realtime court reporting. It will kick in. And, persons viewing my screen are locked out. I could tell them the password, but it's ridiculous to have to keep typing that in. Having to keep touching the keyboard is hard to do when both hands are writing stenography at 250 words per minute. This has been the answer to a big problem for us. We cannot adjust settings, either.
Those that think it's stupid ... well, what can I say? Take it from me, it's not.
