Sep 6 2007Bomb Proof Speed Camera

Currently in use in Holland, Peek Traffic's IDEE, or Innovative Digital Enforcement Environment, is designed to capture speeders using both radar technology, as well as induction loops in the road. The four high resolution digital cameras use infra-red flashes, so speeders don't know they're being snapped. They cost up to $100,000 each and are allegedly bomb and fire proof. Any vibrations or smoke detected by the system sends an alert to the nearest police station. While this is very clever, is the glass paint proof? It seems like they should tackle that before worrying about bombs and fire. It's like locking the door, putting down the blinds, and turning your music up loud before making sweet love to yourself, then realizing your mom is in the room. First things first.
One more of the camera in all its glory after the jump.

I fear not this stationary wannabe police officer. With how much these things cost, do you think the city will be mad when I plant a small active radar cancellation device in the vicinity of each of these?

lol, i like the description of prioritizing, "first things first" haha
wonder how many there are around atm and is it really that useful?

This thing snaps pictures of speeders without them knowing, allowing them to speed on their merry way and receive a ticket in the mail at a later date. So, these are basically toll collectors and have nothing to do with making people slow down or safety or any of that crap. They're just about getting cash from motorists. How about making something that will make speeders slow down then and there. I guess that doesn't really matter, which tells me speeding doesn't really matter, but it's a good excuse to make people pay the city some money.

has nobody considered that if some camera-mad motorist has the resources to take a bomb to this device, then making sure he gets a few points on his licence and a mediocre fine for going 5 miles an hour too fast is probably not the pressing issue, and more focus should be on, you know, his bombs and shit?
p.s. aztech = shit

I love how products make claims of being "fire-proof", but at most they are really fire-retardant. And in this thingy's case, I would say that the POLE this thing is housed in is fire-retardant, but you heat it up and guarunteed melted electronics is what will end up occupying said pole. You guys just let me know when it's time to change my name to "opinionHated". ©

So what? No walking up to it and chucking sticks of dynamite at it?
Darn.

nominus...if you read the graphic you would see that it is in fact "fire retardant" and not 'fire proof" as the geek said. Apparently it's not the only thing in this post that's retardant.

ok..it does say 'fire-resistant', not 'fire-retardant'. my bad. it's all the same...just a big green $$ collector.

active radar jammers are illegal under federal law.

a matrix of these across a city might also help a police department pin down the location of an active volcano. helpful!
