Aug 24 2007Life Size Paper Boat

Artist Frank Boelter fulfilled a childhood fantasy by constructing a 27 foot boat out of paper. The vessel is made from a 1884 sq. ft. sheet of Tetrapak (the stuff milk cartons are made of) and weighs in at 55 lbs. It cost $217 and only took two hours to construct, leading me to believe that if I was $211 richer, I could build one too. It's cool, but not as cool (or big) as mine, which I built using a single one of my used prophylactics.
One more little picture of the construction after the jump.

if you ask me, and you did ask me, this is not a boat. It's lack of keel clearly makes it a floater.

@nominus: no u dont u idort
Who gives a shit what kind of water-floating-on-top-of-and-moving shit it's classified as. It's a f***ing xbox hueg paper boat to everyone else, and that is epic lulz.

oh yes I do. There is no way to steer. THus, it's more of a "leave me stranded in the middle of the lake" platform. But be my guest Anon, make one yourself.

That's not really news...the high school I went to had every physics class make cardboard and duct tape boats to race. We made a submarine.
It's cool though, that this guy followed his dream and made a paper boat like EVERY KID IN MY HIGH SCHOOL. He did manage to spend about $194 more than I did, so I got to give him credit for that.

The idea wasn't that this was an amazing scientific marvel, it's a novelty. Someone used the same paper folding technique as is used to make the tiny paper boats everyone is familiar with, on a scale that makes it possible to ride. Cardboard and duct tape is absolutely nothing like this. This was not meant to be a fishing a boat, a pirate ship, or a cruise line, it's a NOVELTY!

well, I had an idea today.
Now THAT´S a novelty, and still I don´t see myself being credited for it on Geekologie.
By the way, am I the only one with the impression that the quality of the material being posted here has been going steadily down fast and hard... like Britney Spears´ career?

I saw this boat or a similar one in the UK several years ago: it was doing a tour round the country and had a small motor fitted to provide power. it also had ballast fitted to make it stable. this meant it didn't need a keel

I lied, i never went to high school. But before i dropped out of the local vo-tech, i did make a paper hat, which i wear now. I sell fast food! Hooray for Mike, that's me!

Didn't Peter Callesen do this first? (At least as an art installation, not necessarily a physics project)
Besides, Peter Callesen was far more interesting to watch. His boat sank.

I will be first to construct life size paper plane and fly it to Bahamas!

cool, but everyone can put tetrapak in the water, why didn't he build it with standard copy paper?
It was also cheaper!

We are a group of 16 yo students building a paper boat out of newspaper and glue made from water and flour. We are fraising funds for an appeal for Sudanese refugees. At presesnt the design we are working with is a boat 20m long, 5.7 meters wide and 3.6 meters high. It will take approx 400,000 newspapers.

For a historical perspective on paper boat construction - yeah, boats were actually built of paper by several builders in the 1800s and early 1900s - visit Ken Kupery's paperboat website.

this is the answer for ''cool Photos'', u r right but i have used standartd copy paper, it did not work on the water. I am an art student and doing similer things for my final year project. I think the idea of life size bout is really good. My paper bouts are quite small :)
