Jul 30 2007The Doorknob Condition ensures privacy

You know how most people put a tie around their knob or a "Do Not Disturb" sign to ensure privacy? Well designer Arnaud Lapierre decided that wasn't enough, so he put together the Doorknob Condition, which is a doorknob that uses a pulley system to retract the entire doorknob, preventing anybody from getting in without breaking down the door. Although I still prefer my method of keeping people out: building the door out of a giant angry bear.
Check out more shots of this thing in action after the jump.

FIRST!!
And I want that so bad. Just imagine inviting people you don't like over to your house, telling them it's open when they ring the doorbell, and then when they reach for the doorknob YOINK.

And just what do you do when you're outside your room and push the knob in from the outside in a drunken fit of stumbling?

I see a fire... I see a sleeping person locked in their room unaware of the chaos outside. Perhaps the little slot underneath is the 'emergency' opener that works with a keycard or something but that isn't going to be much use in a panic.

This actually seems like a great idea. Would work better at hotels. or apartments.

I'd love for a friend to have one. That way everytime she forgot her key, I'd have an excuse to break down another door.

So... a little rubber suction dart... and poof, security averted!

holy crap I want that thing!
#5 if there's a fire, jump out the window like the rest of us. You too good to suffer multiple limb fractures for a bit of privacy while banging a harem of chicks...ok masturbating to pictures of Bea Arthur, but same thing?

#9 read the comment properly before you post your reply.
Also it might be an idea not to post so many links to your 'superficial' rip-off site here, it's in poor taste and lets be honest.. not very funny either.
oops! I started a fight on the internets!

Nice design. It gives a clean look to the door when it is retracked.

Interesting....and here I was in the dark blissfully thinking that locks were enough.

14. Dumb Idea - July 31, 2007 2:00 PM
Bad idea... how are emergency persons supposed to enter the room when the handle is locked from the inside? Will a skeleton key unlock the door knob?
What about the durability of this doorknob? Remember all the jokes of people getting trapped in rooms because their doorknob broke. Really, those are all jokes since the doorknob is so simple as it is that it can't really be broken... now with a pulley system, this problem could come true.

I love this. Also, commenter #1 is my kinda commenter.
But I really love the idea of building a door out of an angry bear, and then inviting certain people over to visit.
Mwahaha...

Doesn't this serve the same purpose as a deadbolt?

This may be cool, but it won't stop the real problem, people knocking or ringing the doorbell when you do not wish to be disturbed. Personally, I lock the door anyways, especially if I don't want someone just walking in right at the moment. They can't get in anyway. It's being disturbed that we are trying to prevent here.

@ #10 I did read your comment. I was making a joke about the fire hazard angle and disregarding you ruminations on the possible safety features on offer. (aside from that, I was kind enough not to point out to you that the door knob is on the sleeping persons side of the room making it hard for them to be locked inside, no?)
Someone on this site starting a fight? How novel. It seems epidemic with some users on here.
Superficial rip off site? Why because I post twice as much, update a full 3 hours earlier minimum, have a different sense of humor, color scheme & largely different content (5/7 girls in bikini posts per day on Superficial vs. maybe 1 or 2 per week for me if it's an "interesting" shot)
Not bashing Superficial, it's a great site especially for girl watching but I, and many others, don't see the "rip off" angle. I've heard people accuse Superficial of being a Dlisted rip off. I don't see that either. Methinks some people get far too protective of "their" babies sometimes.
I was posting 1 link. 1 like a signature. I wasn't comment blasting with 6 links. Just for you I won't do it anymore. Happy? (though my stats tracker of the IP's shows plenty of people coming and coming back on their own volition)

Are avantgarde future-industrialist designers really having that big a crisis with home security?
