Jun 27 2007DH1 Disaster House

Designer Gregg Fleishman has designed this DH1 Disaster House, which is a 14 square foot shelter built out of sustainable European birch. The entire thing assembles without fasteners, which makes it especially useful in emergency situations. Plus I've always wanted to live in a home random people could walk by and disassemble.

it's 14 feet square...not 14 square feet! LOL
3. non - June 27, 2007 9:19 PM
Uh, no, I'm pretty sure it's 14 square feet.

Exactly what kind of disaster could this shelter people from? Famine?
5. mac - June 27, 2007 9:35 PM
Cause nothing says safety like a house that looks like its made from K'Nex pieces.
Oh and Smartass, awesome short circuit reference.

A 14 square foot shelter would the size of a small elevator.

i`m sad for the claustrophobic people that will get caught in there, i think they`d pick the disaster over the house anytime.

It's definitely 14 foot square, not 14 square feet. That's why it says on the linked page that its "14' square."
It's 196 square feet, as is obvious from the photos showing people able to walk into it.

"Exactly what kind of disaster could this shelter people from? Famine?"
1. It's an art piece.
2. Its not to shelter people from disaster, it's temporary accommodation for when a disaster destroys your house. You know like when Katrina hit New Orleans but none of you Americans cared because most of the victims were black? Like that.

Is it made of CHOCOLATE? A bullet proof, earthquake proof, nuclear bomb resistant, CHOCOLATE HOUSE??? YEAH!!!

What's the difference between 14 foot square and 14 square feet? Shouldn't that be the same?
Sorry, I'm Canadian. Oh and, can't do math.

1. A 14 square foot room could be many sizes, for example 2' by 7', or 3.5' by 4', but a 14 foot square room is 14' by 14'...
2. Oh and XavGill, the only people who didnt care about the Katrina victims were the people in charge...the rest of the country did and still does care about all the victims, many of whom are still homeless...

What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?
Derek, this is just a small...
I don't wanna hear your excuses! The building has to be at least... three times bigger than this!

Whats wrong with a tent?
Might be a good garden house for someone but for disasters?
Can't imagine the red cross buying 10 thousand of these for the next crisis...

jesus christ you're all f-ing morons
14 foot square means it's 14x14
14 square feet would mean it's like 3.75' x 3.75 = 14sq.ft
and it's not to be used DURING a disaster you dipshits. it's a quick and easy shelter to be installed in say.... Kansas when a hurricane blows through and picks up Dorothy and Toto, leveling all those trailer parks.
with that said, check out www.legarefurniture.com
same idea, but for actually usuable furniture

none needs to take a pill... a chill pill.

yes, the U.S. government reaction was botched, particularly the fact that thousands of FEMA trailers provided to those displaced and homeless remained unused. but i'm pretty sure they went unused because they didn't look like the DH1 house.
(but yeah, in all seriousness, like most cases of aid you can't just go around telling people what they need you need to listen to them explain their needs. anywho here's an article relevant on it: http://www.todaysthv.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=47962)

Wow Pastor Al, I'm back in 1983 all over again.
20. Shoppo - June 28, 2007 2:05 PM
I don't know about you all, but where I come from, you gets laughed at for living in a trailer. This would be a step below.
On the upside, since it's a prototype who's only real customer would be the government, each unit will cost a bajillion dollars.
And of course it's after the disaster, you ever see a picket fence in a tornado? This would be ten times worse!
Twentieth! Don't hate!

Wait... Wait... Wait... Did the guy who called all the previous posters "F-ing morons" just site an example in which one could live in the aforementioned house "AFTER A HURRICANE BLOWS THROUGH KANSAS"??? As in, say from the ocean... The ocean next to Kansas...
"F-ing morons" huh, well if that isn't the potato chip calling the pretzel salty... 'Twas a twister that flung Dorothy and Toto to Oz my friend, a twister.
