May 24 2007Toddler Destroyes Monks' Sand Painting

toddler-sand-painting.jpg

Eight Tibetan monks spent two days cross-legged on the floor at Union Station, leaning over to meticulously create an intricate design of colored sand as an expression of their Buddhist faith. They were more than halfway done when, within seconds, their work was destroyed by a dancing toddler. And in typical Tibetan monk fashion, they simply smiled and started over. Which is probably a better reaction than I would've had: drop kicking the baby through a plate glass window while screaming "DIE!"

First!
..and wtf.

You know that monk's themselves destroy these sand paintings shortly after they are finished...so really the toddler isn't off the mark.

2nd!!
F***ing stupid kid!! I hope he gets a beating tonight...

And stupid f***ing parents.. what the hell?!? Control your damn chiid!!!

They were probably christian evangelist...or just stupid white people..

what kind of skeez sees that their child has ruined something, grabs it, and flees? ugh.

2: The monks destroying the thing themselves has a special significance which isn't achieved by the kid dancing across the thing. Plus the kid's not what the Union Station signed up for. Which isn't to say that this is the worst thing in the world or whatever—just that, when the parents are through with him, the kids remains should get stuffed into one of those little jars the monks put the sand in. *They're* not Buddhists, right?

I assume this was some rotten brat belonging to white bread tourist family who go lost on their way to Euro-Disney.

I have no idea. MY son has never done that bef.... My son has NEVER been to union station. Or New York, Or America.

I really don't approve of the racism here either.
Aside from that, children remain children, however awfull they act, you can't expect them to know the value of things at their age. But yeah, drop-kick inclinations...

Andew Edmark, lost on their way to euro disney? In washington DC? They must have had been really, really f***ing lost.

Let's get real, folks. Let's try to set aside an area of floor in the middle of a busy train station for sand art? Are you kidding me? And the parents are supposed to know that there's this delicate work in progress on the floor? Go ahead and have you faith...just have it somewhere else!

Nice to see a post like this once in a while because although there seems to be a bit of animosity toward the kid from all of us here, there's not a shred of ill will or even mild disgruntlement on the part of the Tibetan monks.

Mind you it's probably all about perspective; the Chinese destroyed their monastery, so some kid wrecking their sand mandala kinda pales by comparison....

I watched the video and was hoping for a Riverdance or a Moonwalking kid at least...Now if it was Hu Jintao dancing on that sand... I'm pretty sure we would have seen some righteous indignation (a Budda kick to the happy sacks)

God. I just hate kids so much. This is why I'm getting my tubes tied. The snot nosed little ingrates just rule the world, don't they? I say, bring back the right to hit other peoples children!

Upside...please do. You'll be doing them and all of us a favor.

Kids ARE gonna do stuff. What amazes me is that the mother appears to have walked out of the station without her kid. Blame her if you're going to blame someone.

This is why I'm a proud member of A.F.T.L.O.S.C (Alliance For The Leashing Of Small Children).

Quick guys, let's see how many more parallels we can draw between this, American arrogance, and the undeniable fact that kids throughout the rest of the world couldn't possibly be so misbehaved!!! Ready... set... GO!

#10: The area is obviously fenced off.

The mother seems to be the one at fault for just running away and not reporting it. You can't fault a 3 year old for being attracted to brightly coloured sand. Innocence is a wonderful thing. I'm glad the monks saw that.

Watch the video people, IMO neither the child nor the mother could be classified as "white". Plus it is kinda funny how the kid gets hauled away by the mother as she tries to act nonchalant.

Bit weird how she left him alone, out of her site, for so long?

Number 16...that kid looks to be about 2 years old. Think that makes a difference to him? Like I said....I fault the parent here. Look at the video. WTF was she doing?

Matt...well said. Boy...these people are gonna be in for it if they ever have kids of their own!

You guys are right..

They were naggers not white trash.

First the temple in china, and now this!

It's a good thing you get a complimentary sense of humor when you achieve enlightenment.

They should have had that area protected by the break-dancer for an earlier video. Kids get to close and all they see is a flurrie of hands and feet and then they are violently flung into the air.

The path to enlightenment is achieved by letting go of all things material. In a way the kid was just helping them along =)

c'mon people...isn't it EVERYONE'S primal instinct to dance on brightly colored sand that is meticulously designed? (the answer ryhmes with LESS)

give me a break. this kid shouldn't be punished for his parents inability to watch what he is doing. it's like saying that he should be punished for burning himself on the stove when his parents didn't tell him not to.

I live in KC and the amount of news this is getting is bs. let it go and get back to the scary sheep and regular geekologie shit.

for those of you who think the kid got lost going to Euro Disney, then retorted with something about Washington D.C. This happened in Kansas City, Missouri.

If the fact that it was in Missouri isn't fodder enough, I don't know what is then.

And give up the racist bullshit, if the kid was purple he still would have done it.

Wow, some of you guys are monstrously stupid. What kind of moron immediately jumps to the conclusion that a TWO year-old would dance on some sand because of his Christian upbringing and the fact that he's white? The world's been telling me my whole life that my kind (White, Southern, Christian) has the market cornered on blind prejudice. Guess not. Can't you see the FIRST zoomed in picture of the dark skinned kid dancing away? Or are you fools so "above the superficial" that you mistook him for one of the monks?

The damn kid didn't know what he was doing, and his ding-bat mother should just be glad her son didn't get snatched in one of the most violent, crime-infested cities in America.

It was definetly some dumb little nigglet. So in your face you white christian hating haters. White Power! White Power!
Oh and God sucks balls!
So do white people
And everyone else.

Behead the child and saint the monks.

Lets remember why they're doing this in the first place. The attention the kid brought probably just multiplied the money those monks are going to make.

...Nah, I'm still with Mobius' idea. I say we flay the kid alive and burn the ovaries out of the mother with an acid-filled turkey baster to ensure that the uncultured, brainless bitch doesn't have any more abominations to let loose on the planet.

Christ. The only thing I hate more than snot-faced kids are the idiot parents who raise them to be rotten.

LOL this is something i totally would have done.

O BRIGHT SHINNEY MUST KNOW WHAT IT IS MUST TOUCH. what are these rope things meah they dont seem to be for me cause obvisouly they are taller then me i therefor can go under with ease. o look its sand how about that, pretty sand o its not glued down omg lets see what i can do can i make one myself. hummm mom doesnt seem to be watching me it must be ok. O DEAR GOD MOM LET GO OW not so hard OW WHY ARE YOU PULLING ME MOM

oooo i did something i wasnt suppose to......

side note that mom doesnt desirve to be a mom and obviously doesnt care about her child.

fact one she sees that there is something fenced off and is bright and colorful

two she has a child, a boy none the less. as the above perspective will show that bright things in the eyes of kids means attention must investigate.

fact two she only realizes what has happend a good solid two minutes, she pays no attention to her child or his where abouts.

fact three she has no consideration for the fact that art was damaged and trys to escape without punishment or try to apologize for the wrong doings of her offspring.

fact four. when she relaizes where and what her child is playing in she casually walks up to him. if that was my mother all hell would have been let loose upon my soul and the bowels of hell would engulf me. hence i was a leash child my parents learned.

the child was doing something he had no idea was incorrect or inapproriate for SHIT SAKE KIDS HAVE SAND BOXES what natural conclusion would accure for the kid to do BRIGHT COLORS SAND = FUN.

if anything the mother should be shot in the face and made example of for all future parents of america. and the kid should be giving to the monks as slave labour.

What I want to know is; who thought that it made sense to put a camera near the sand painting, but not an actual human guard? Oh, yeah, it was probably the same guy who thought that movie theatre ropes can generate protective force-fields when positioned in a circle.

I hope the kid had a fun time because i'm sure he's never going to hear the end of this from his parents. not too mention they'll probably bring it up in the future when he's grown up just to embarass him. and all because he didn't notice the monks... just SAND! WooHoo!

What is to know something ? What is difference between knowing about human and dog?
I hoping you will understand whot will people sent for you E- MAIL?

If you were to read up on what a mandala is, you'd understand why such an occurance should be of no importance to a Buddhist.

"The monks destroying the thing themselves has a special significance which isn't achieved by the kid dancing across the thing."

Sorry Dan, but you're wrong. The destruction of the mandala represents imperamanence. That the toddler may have destroyed it earlier than planned is a test of the monks' understanding of non-attachment, but nothing more.

Are you all f***ing blind and retarded???

That kids was most certainly NOT white! Did you even watch the video?

And what the f*** is your problem if he was white!

Anyway, f*** that kid. This is why I condone a good, ole fashion spanking!

#32..
i aint readin all that.

Chances are, the monks themselves simply considered it the universes way of saying "you made a mistake, start it over again."

"I say we flay the kid alive "

Hey, it's an American boy, that's probably already happened.

"and burn the ovaries out of the mother with an acid-filled turkey baster to ensure that the uncultured, brainless bitch doesn't have any more abominations to let loose on the planet."

That however, has probably not. Sadly.

The main point of the sand paintings is to meditate on the impermanence of the world. I wish parents would watch their kids better, but I don't blame the kid and I doubt it bothered the monks at all. So, c'est la vie.

I couldn't be mad at the kid, being this an innocent. But the mother... she's supposed to watch her little angel is not, well, destroying other people's stuff.

In case you haven't seen the CBS News video of the event, I found it at http://www.theedinburgstar.net/ among other places. (And you get a promo for Ghost Whisperer too).

I think the monks have the right idea completely. The whole point was for people to enjoy the work and get something out of it. That kid got the point...he let loose with his fascination like kids are supposed to. The worst part of this video is the kid being left alone...I'm a mom of a toddler and that would keep me up at night if I'd left my kid alone in a train station. She totally saw him looking at that artwork and just kept going!!! God knows what could have happened to him. But the kid was so into it, he looks like he was just loving how his feet made the colors change. I think the video is actually delightful. I'm glad the monks saw the value of what that child experienced. Kids will be kids. And all you holier than thou's without any will either change your tune someday (as I have had to) or stay bitter about things you can't change...like how other people's kids should behave.

And who the hell thought that thing was gonna last in a freakin' train station anyways? You want your art to last? Stick it in a museum under glass. And if the monks don't care why should anyone else?

I agree. I'm sure the fact they use sand is symbolic of the transitory nature of the world. The painting just transited faster than they expected.

These sand paintings are a religious ritual not only for Buddists, but some Native American tribes and Latin American cultures use them as well. They are a symbol of nothing being everlasting and are destroyed by the creators and not by 2 year olds whose mothers allow to free range.

I wonder if the kid had destroyed a creche with a likeness of the baby Jesus would people be so tolerant.

the evidence is conclusive.

children ruin everything.

#36: Right on the mark.

Lumo #35 sums it up perfect LOL

Just a quick FYI: This isn't a real train station. It's an old train station that was converted. There are several restaurants, an I-Max theater and it's connected to an interactive area called "Science City." It's not very crowded or busy and there are displays there all the time (everything from the Dead Sea Scrolls to the Titanic to the Holocaust) that are "Look but don't touch."

Oh my GOD. I would have pushed the kid into an oven and made a pizza out of him! D:

Regardless of what the spirtual nature of this is. No, i don't give two shits less (nothing offensive meant) about "a creche with a likeness of the baby Jesus," but how can anyone in good conscience condemn a toddler for their parents' bad parenting? Obviously a vast majority of you are not parents, and based on comments, should never become so.

What happened is in no way the toddler's "fault." He/she doesn't know anything beyond "ooohh...dirt to play in" just like the playground he/she probably frequents on a regular basis.

The parent, on the other hand, should have every negative thing said in these comments happen. There is no way that I'd let a child of that age bracket go inside an obvious boundary, much less run amuck in the train station, regardless of the train station's normal activity.

The intolerances over this should most certainly be directed at the parent and parenting choices made.

In fact, the parent(s) of the child should match 100% of whatever is raised.

"And in typical Tibetan monk fashion, they simply smiled and started over."
I don't think the monks in this story would be very happy that you're hating on the kid, his parents, and their religion. But different strokes for different folks, right?

Uhh, oh man, that sucks. I seriously would have kicked the kid and then wrapped my fingers round it's throat and then squeezed.

Painting with sand takes patience. Then you destroy it, because things are fleeting and we should never get attached to them. According to buddhism, you all fail at life for allowing yourself to get upset at this child. If it wasn't a child it could have been a cat, or some birds, or a newspaper blowing in a sudden gust of wind. Things change, and we need to accept that. When things get broken down... we start over.

And I don't know about you, but I find it a lot easier to start over with a smile.

The parents of the kid should have stabbed the monk for smiling like that. Smart ass monk should die!

"Quick guys, let's see how many more parallels we can draw between this, American arrogance, and the undeniable fact that kids throughout the rest of the world couldn't possibly be so misbehaved!!! Ready... set... GO!"

I'm from the UK and I can personally testify that the little brats are every bit as horrible over here as they are in the US. Actually, they may even be worse :)

LOL

After dropkicking the kid, I would have dropkicked its parents. DEATH TO ALL! Good thing I'm not a monk, that is generally against their policies.
