May 21 2007Electrified laser defense system

electric-plasma.jpg

This Portal Denial System was created by Ionatron and uses a laser-induced plasma channel to electrocute anybody that steps in its path. It fires a laser across an opening to create a conductive stream of plasma which acts as a virtual wire. Because the plasma is conductive, it can be used to fire a lethal or "less lethal" shot of electricity, electrocuting anybody that crosses the beam. Unfortunately, this thing is only authorized for sale to the US government. It's almost as if they don't trust people to install these things in their homes. Hey, I almost got my VCR working, so I'm pretty sure I can handle something as simple as an electrified laser beam. C'mon now!

A video of this monster in action after the jump.

This would be great to keep Grandma from wandering outside the house again.

I'm thinking it would be rather easy to bypass these, provided you were aware of their location, or even just their existence on the premises. And I'm not even talking about the old fashioned crawl under the laser method.

how about I just crawl/limbo underneath the bottom laser? Youre going to have to do better than that to keep me out of the womens bathroom!

how bout we just cut the power out in the building....

i wana put one on a gun! PEW PEW! only more... ZAP ZAP

That thing sounds like the tap dancing darkie on the Lawerence Welk Show.

Oh no, I didnt just say that did I?

That sounds more like spanking, vigorous spanking or slapping!

Depending on your prey that's either going to draw them into their electric death or repel them from your clutches.

On the plus side, when these elcto-plasma-security fences become common enough to be situated in your home you can always blame the Portal Denial System when your mom asks you where all the vigorous slapping noises are coming from.

Portal Denial System....WTF? I hope they don't start putting these in ladies pants. No I'm only kidding, I hope the DO.

that was pretty sub-par.

couldnt they have put a cat or a goat through the field?

so, its kinda like that laser field thing in resident evil, except it doesn't chop people into little pieces? it should chop people into little pieces. now that i would buy.

tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap. the annoying sound alone is enough to deter me.

if we can't booby trap our houses with spring guns, we aren't going to be able to use these legally, either. boo hiss.

I want to meet the home invader dumb enough to consider walking through that after hearing the sound it made.

doesn't it bother anyone that only the government has rights to this thing? yep, they'll put it on a gun, can set it to stun or kill... and people are worried about old-fashioned firearms??

I assume the range would be very limited.

Well that video was pretty disappointing. I was expecting them to electrocute someone. How do we know this thing actually kills people? Hah like i'm going to buy something that doesnt really electrocute people. They should have at least thrown a watermelon at it.

I pity the fools that wasted their money developing this turkey.

Seems like this could easily be defeated with a faraday cage around whomever wanted to cross the beam. Or you could slide a mirror over the emitter and be kosher too, I'd think.

I don't think people realize the temperature of what's considered to be plasma or plasma-based. Pfft, if I saw anything like that, I'd look for some kind of console that might control it. And hey, as far as that goes, turning it off might be like, you know, in some RPGs: Laser on, laser off. And if I couldn't, I'd walk away, probably saying, "Yeah, we're f*cked." @Nikki: Resident Evil style?

I want one!!! Not that there's anything in my little rathole two bedroom apartment that someone would break in for, but still. I'd make a party out of drinking, and throwing things at the laser beam thingies in my wall. Oh yeah. And I'd start with the exboyfriend...

In most spy movies they just use mirrors to deflect any killer lasers away from them. Couldn't you do that here?
