May 31 2007$19,000 VPI HR-X Turntable

The VPI HR-X Turntable by TEAC is a turntable that features a new belt-driven design that comes with a 50-mm thick platter which actually floats on an air suspension system at 45rpm. And I have no idea what that means, but it costs a whopping $19,000. And it's not like this is some super new audio technology, all it does is play records. Old records. Like the kind your grandpa listens to. Anybody with enough money to actually buy this thing might enjoy this game I invented. It's called "Give Me All Your Cash." Basically you give me all your cash, and then I throw a party. It's very fun.

Hate to break it to you, but people still make, sell, and buy vinyl, even major labels..
However, as kick ass as that machine looks to be, I can think of very, very few things that are worth $19,000. If that thing were $300, then, ehh, maaaaybe.

Eh, they're more of a novelty than anythign else though.

God. I think I just drooled a bit on my keyboard.
But I don't have the funds...
Anyone care to lend me $19,000?
...Okay, so I wouldn't spend it on that...but your point is?
5. FAGGOTRON - May 31, 2007 8:00 PM
#4 I can lend you the funds. of course in exchange for sexual favours.
you do like it balls deep ya?
6. Ladida - May 31, 2007 9:24 PM
Hey #1...$300? Have you ever bought a turn table?
For someone who spins, that's a delicious turn table, I wouldn't spend $19,000, but would I drop $5k for a set? Yeah...that'd be sweet.
Perhaps not functional for traveling to gigs, but it'd be sick to have at a house party.

DaMan, you are an idiot.
8. Jockey - May 31, 2007 10:45 PM
i heard direct drive is the way to go. but i don't know anything. mine cost 5 bucks at a garage sale and it plays all my records just fine.
9. Clancey - June 1, 2007 7:10 AM
Jockey's right, and I'm sure Ladida will agree, belt drive is not much good for anybody who plans to do anything professional with this.
A $19000 belt drive deck is really only of use to some eccentric old millionaire.
10. norye - June 1, 2007 7:54 AM
Clancey you are totally wrong. Direct drive is the best for DJs and people who scratch. This is a hifi record player, probably with extremely good sound-quality and extremely good rpm accuracy.. see?

I like music as much as the next guy. In fact, I probably like music MORE than the next guy. And I'm old enough to remember LPs (bairly).
I'm guessing it's a sign of the decay of NA society that we continue to re-"invent" old inventions, make them chromey and then sell them to people for some people's annual salery.
Tell you what: Go buy a good turntable on E-bay for 100 bucks and then give the other 18,900 to the Salvation Army.
12. vanman - June 1, 2007 9:52 AM
My god, when did TEAC become a reputable company? I'm betting they haven't, and are trying to buy their way into the upper fringes of society.
13. Pastor Al - June 1, 2007 10:52 AM
Or just spend the $18,900 on Thai child prostitutes like I did. I got two turntables and a microphone!
14. Pastor Al - June 1, 2007 11:12 AM
This is my rant. Why, if you have a problem with me or what I've said, would you post a comment under MY handle? Why not take me to task under your own handle. This way you aren't cowardly hiding your identity, and at the same time not being dishonest while issuing me a scathing reprimand. Is it because you have nothing to say that will debunk my ideas or methods? Why not let me myself make an ass of myself? God knows that I do make an ass of myself on a fairly regular basis. I'm just saying post under your own handle. Until you can decide to do that, just keep sucking on my nuts. You see, the only time I flex nuts is when my penile tissue is squarely between your lips. Now if you hate me, and are intelligent enough to square off with me in a debate, lets do it.
15. DaMan - June 1, 2007 11:31 AM
Chris, you fell into my trap.
Ladida's right, they're not functional.

And Abba.

*also: ewww. Do you kiss your mom with that mouth?
17. YOU SHIT HEADS - June 1, 2007 12:58 PM
hey IDIOTS (those who talk about spinning with this turntable)
There is no pitch control!
Have fun spinning with you belt-driven, no pitch-control turntable.
if your rich and dont spin, then you'll probably have really good sound with this floating platter... if you have proper needles
18. Joe Mamma - June 1, 2007 1:28 PM
OHHH SNAP! You fake spinners just got SERVED! Word to ya mutha.
19. Joe Mamma - June 1, 2007 1:31 PM
Also, gotta love all the whiny bitches on here about their "handle". Like it is so f@cking important that everyone else know excactly what you said and what you think about stupid crap on the intertubes. Get a life!
20. vanman - June 1, 2007 4:09 PM
Tell me, Joe, what is it like to have a life?
21. Joe Mamma - June 1, 2007 5:30 PM
Pretty boring actually. I guess you guys are right. Let's write angry letters to the admin and demand they go to type-key. Long live virginity!
22. Ladida - June 2, 2007 3:54 AM
Good observation, 17.
Never checked the specs on 'em, was going off description. It'd suck to spin without pitch control...BUT do-able, depending on what you're spinning. DnB? No way...trance? VERY do-able. (but who the hell wants to spin that shit anyhow)
Never the less, still an awesome show off piece at a house party.
23. Ladida - June 2, 2007 4:01 AM
Oooh, and Norye...you're full of shit.
Most people who spin would take a direct drive turntable over a belt driven.
Surre, direct drives used to suck a while ago, but they've improved. And higher torque is what most spinners like, rather than a slow start up with distortion.
24. Luke (Tsar) - June 3, 2007 5:16 AM
Ladida, read Norye's comment again. he said just what you did. DJ's use direct drive, HiFi enthusiasts use belt drive.
it's that simple.
25. sboy - June 4, 2007 7:23 PM
More people talking shit. All shit, such as ladida. You can't spin with this. Period. F*** trance, f*** hiphop, f*** everything, you not going to be spinning shit with this.
"Never checked the specs on 'em, was going off description"
WTF? You look at the thing and you'll know it's not for spinning. How stupid are you?
"It'd suck to spin without pitch control..."
You don't need pitch control on the spin table, but it's nice to have. What you need is a pro amp, lets say from Vestax.
This is a rich man's toy (and quite a decent one), like #17 said.
BTW: I don't spin, but my friend is a ex-trance, now hiphop dj.

This unit is made by VPI Industries, a quality American company. (not TEAC) MADE IN USA.
For another great high end company in the US, try Audio Research.
31. Forexpreneur - June 7, 2009 1:50 AM
This record player is for those such as me who are into extremely hi-fi which only LP's can capture with warmth. SACD and DVD-Audio come close but those are no longer in print but believe it or not LP's still are. For the record (no pun intended) there are hi-fi record players that cost over $ 100,000, and yes those are new.
Why would someone spend so much money on this old technology? Because no other recorded music to date sounds as clear or warm as LP's, except for Lossless audio such as Apple Lossless and FLAC which are being released as downloads like MP3, just 10 to 20 times the file size for hi-fi nuts like me but the releases are very limited. So do we sit and listen to our LP's instead of CD's? Some do, but a lot of us, myself included, use a super high end player going through a tube amp which then goes through an audio converter which converts it into a digital signal so we can record it forever into a Lossless audio file like FLAC. Then I put it onto a computer which plays it through a $ 500 USB tube amp designed for the computer and I listen to my music through $ 15,000 headphones. Nothing sounds like it. Yeah, some of us do live a different life and spend annual salaries on things that seem frivolous, but then we are often the ones who own a big portion of the company you work at. I hope this explains things a little better. Take care all. I know I will.
32. Di - June 16, 2009 6:55 AM
Forexpreneur... Ik mate I agree.. but
a) There not exist 15000 headphones in hte market... Even Sennheiser Orpheus WITH the tube amp cost less (If you find any anymore)
b) Having a $500 DAC - preamplifier, is not considering an expensive equipment, and for sure not high end...
d)Losless files sound good? NO- period. Complared to regular Mp3s, yes but how can you compare them to the sound of a high quality LP? Its like night and day
e) To everybody here: You are a bunch of idiots, your brain has turned to yogurt from the intense spinning you do... And... If you do dj stuff for living, I guarantee you will never be able to afford something like this... And if EVER manage to afford it your hearing will be like shit... Go spin your shit and let some older nuts (as you call them) leave their own dreams....
My 5 cent
