Feb 14 2007Largest drain hole in the world
This is the world's largest drain hole, and is located at the Monticello Dam in northern California. When the dam reaches capacity the spillway swallows water at a rate of 48,800 cubic feet per second, emptying about 700 feet away. Super cool? Hecks yeah it is.

I've seen quite a few of these kinds of photos, they just kinda scare me. I guess its some kind of phobia of big holes?

When I was at UC Davis, a graduate student swam into the glory hole, as her preferred means of suicide. She did it with people watching on from the observation area, obviously horrified. Lake Berryessa wasn't as full as these pictures; she sat on the edge before going through with it. Apparently it's over 150 ft straight down before the tunnel starts to curve. They had to rappel down there to retrieve the corpse. So there's your morbid glory hole moment, if you're like me and wonder if anyone actually got sucked in somehow.. I read about in the Aggie. Must have been either 97 or 98.
